A MAN has been arrested after allegedly throwing a tantrum on a plane over a $10 sandwich, forcing the aircraft to turn around and land in Darwin. The unidentified passenger boarded Virgin Flight DJ1432 from Darwin to Perth at around 7am this morning, when an hour into the flight he became verbally abusive over a $10 sandwich, The NT News reports.
The crew blocked the aisles on both sides of the man's seat and he was then taken to the back of aircraft.
"He was rambling, his behaviour was erratic and he was shouting," one passenger told The NT News.

I must admit the times I have flown with VA with work on Flexi fares, those luke mangan sandwiches and wraps, were absolutely disgusting & taste terrible but yeah wouldn't get abusive over it!

Yet another diversion caused by a child. This is getting out of control, every other week there are diversions due to children behaving badly on aircraft. Ban them (<3YO) I say, who is with me?

That the article kept referring to him as a 'man', I am guessing he was a bit more that 3YO

Oh I agree. How many people are going to be disadvantaged by this disruptive scourge of toddlers? :p

Especially being sandwiched between the FA's on the way down the back

If more people don't engage in these acts of civil disobedience , then the situation will never change.

Free the Luke Mangan Gourmet Sandwich!

At least he didin't get the Wrap like that guy on the icelandair flight.

I don't see why he was treated so badly. It is not as if he reclined when he was eating it. That would be something to turn a plane around for.

If it was a Neil Perry sandwich, even if it were free of charge, I'm sure that the article would be sharpening the axe against Qantas, rather than the abusive moron who is obviously an idiot who deserves the book thrown at him, along with the sandwich and then some.

My guess is that he will be released without charge. I think it'd be dubious if VA recover any costs due to the diversion from the pax, though they may exercise their right to deny his being carried on any of their aircraft in the future.

Naturally, there is one commenter on the NT News website implying that the man's action was not justified, but making a noise about a $10 sandwich.... "why wouldn't you".....

While easy to joke about someone going off about bad airline food, we all do, this over reaction I suspect is because the poor sap in question has other issues beyond his control.

Do we know what his beef was with the sandwich?

I think he was just hamming it up a bit over the price, but it all went a bit too far. There's little margarine for error in these situations. Unfortunately the individual ended up in a bit of a pickle with the police.

I was told on a flight last night from HKT (of which I was starving and looking forward to at least a pie) that they only had sandwiches on board. One look at the 3 sandwiches and I knew they were not Luke Mangan's (of which I don't like anyway but would have eaten) but very bad looking and repulsive made in Thailand ones. FA tried to argue the point with me, of which I told her, that both her and I knew they were not Luke Mangan, so please don't think I can't tell the difference. She apologised and I munched on pringles instead. Most horrible looking sandwiches I had ever seen.

Even the 'Luke Mangan' Australian made ones on VA domestic flights are terrible at best, so I can only imagine how the HKT ones looked.

 Wash your mouth out with soap!!

I'd be prepared to fight for my Luke Mangan Sandwich. (At least it is not quite as pretentious as the QF Fred Perry stuff!!!!:p)
