Have a quick question seeing as I'm getting a bit confused.
We booked a relative on a MEL-DXB-MUC return journey at the start of February, for travel in April. The journey was booked through QF due to a significant price change though is only on EK-metal. I'm a bit confused about what the baggage limit is because I always thought that the operating carriers' limit applied but the QF and EK websites MYB show "1 Piece" not 30 kg." Therefore the relative is getting a bit anxious about how much she can take.

Thanks in advance,

P.S. If it helps, the MEL-DXB leg is booked under a QF 8*** number, while the DXB-MUC leg is a EK number. Both of the return flights are QF 8*** numbers.

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

Good question, I am in a similar situation. I booked on 13th Feb, so under the 'old limits' for flights in April/May, CBR-MEL-LHR/LGW-DXB-BKK-SYD-CBR, the difference is my middle two legs (LGW-DXB-BKK) are QF flight numbers on EK the rest Qantas so not 100% sure if the Qantas limits carry over or if it is EK limits. Must admit I was going to call and confirm closer to the date but if someone has the answer then even better.

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

With IATA 302, I believe it's the luggage allowance for the "Most Significant Carrier".

For EkFlyer22 it's the operating carrier of the Oz-Middle East (TC3/TC2) segments of each journey that define this - so it should be EK's allowance throughout.

With ajw737 it's the allowance of the operating carrier for MEL-LHR (TC3-TC2) on the outbound and the operating carrier of the DXB-BKK segment (TC2-TC3) for the return.

Qantas state that all their codeshare agreements state that it is the baggage allowance of the marketing carrier (see question 4: http://www.qantas.com.au/agents/dyn/qf/policies/FAQsInterlineBaggage.pdf).

In the case of resolution 302, it's going to depend on whether Emirates have published a rule stating it is the marketing carrier (which they may well have done):

Step 2: Where the one or more published baggage provisions differ between participating carriers, apply any common provisions are where provisions differ the published baggage provisions of the Most Significant Carrier (MSC). (In case of code share flights this will be the Operating Carrier, unless that carrier publishes a rule stipulating that it will be the Marketing Carrier).

For the first few months, which ever is the best luggage allowance, this is the one that will be used (when travelling on QFi). Or the cheapest excess.

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

Interesting - Qantas are trying their own take on things.

Where baggage allowance differs, IATA 302 would override QF's view of things as 302 specifically indicates the baggage allowance of the operating carrier which is deemed the MSC for 'journies' on non USA itineraries.
Under all Qantas codeshare arrangements the marketing carrier’s baggage allowance applies. The QF allowances vary for some QF marketed codeshare routes – see qantas.com/baggage for details. For non-US itineraries where the Operating Carrier accepts excess baggage, it may apply its own charges for the carriage of that excess baggage.
[-]Maybe they meant to have "Marketing" - as I understand it the use of the term "Marketing" for non USA itineraries would simply be incorrect.[/-]

Resolution 302 also indicates that the operating carrier may publish a rule stating it is the marketing carrier.

Here it is from the ANA (keeping it independant of EK and QF) site (notice the bit I have bolded):

Maybe they meant to have "Marketing" - as I understand it the use of the term "Marketing" for non USA itineraries would simply be incorrect.

If you ask me the IATA 302 resolution is more confusing than the US DOT rules! US DOT doesn't care about the operating carrier nor who is most significant... first international and marketing carrier is all they care about, much simpler.

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

I think this has just made me more confused! I have an EK flight followed by a QF flight so I have no idea where I stand....

QF and EK baggage allowances will be pretty much the same as each other. From Qantas' POV which ever is the most generous allowance (for the first few months), this will apply.

Excluding if the first journey on your ticket was a US originating flight, in which case, all your baggage allowances will be the first carriers baggage allowance.

Not if you booked in Feb...theres a 7kg difference in Y.

Between piece and weight system, yes. But as I stated, for the first few months, it will be whatever the most generous baggage allowance or cheapest excess rate.
