LTP - the $1,500,000 reality

Qantas probably knows that eventually some (or I'm going out on a limb here, most) LTP will stop flying premium cabins once they retire (eg corporate travellers, or even self funded travellers becoming retirees) so the LTP then becomes a liability for Qantas. If that person decides to change to economy flights, Qantas bears the cost of the lounge access (that's not factored into the ticket cost) and all the other costs associated with OWE eg. priority check in, priority luggage tagging, priority boarding, one world on costs, administrative costs etc.

This is exactly why the bar is high. With many still travelling for say 2 decades post retirement the overhead to QANTAS would be too large if the bar was too low.

Also the higher the bar the less likely they retiree would be to to become an economy flyer given their likely wealth profile.

Vic, I don't think I am assuming anything. Qantas makes it very clear that the level is simply Platinum:

I'm sure i read a quote that extra benefits would be provided. Noting that table doesn't list lounge access for lifetime gold, so it isn't the full set of benefits. Anyway, just my opinion, a high target demands high benefits.

To be pedantic 21 years of minimum P1 will get you there with 600 SC to spare but who is counting. I am about to roll into my 5 year as a P1 and do more than the 3600 on an annual basis, even at base level for 21 years QF can keep their LTP.

I'm certainly not saying it's worthwhile obtaining lifetime platinum

Maybe this:
More than just a Lifetime Platinum card
Eligible frequent flyers will be contacted by Qantas ahead of the September 2019 launch of the Lifetime Platinum status tier.

It's expected that the first wave of Lifetime Platinum card-holders will number in the hundreds rather than the thousands, with the Lifetime Platinum roster being even more exclusive than the invitation-only Chairman's Lounge.

However, the airline promises they'll get more than just a shiny new card for their travel wallet. Qantas Lifetime Platinum will come with perks, service and recognition above and beyond standard Qantas Platinum membership, rolled into a secret set of "unpublished benefits".

So they should..... pile on the additional benefits IMO.

Thanks, that's exactly what I saw. Tried to find it, but hopeless at searching. Recognition beyond platinum and unpublished benefits. I see lifetime platinum one in that marketing and the 75000 roughly matches the qualification benchmark for the other lifetime status

I think the benefits would probably be in-between WP and P1. I think LTP1 if ever offered would be set at a higher lifetime SC level again.

For LTP I reckon they could decide to offer for example: Higher upgrade priority than WP but lower than P1. Maybe also upgrade four days outside instead of 2.

They also could offer higher priority on phone queue than WP and perhaps be more generous in releasing award seats.

Pretty easy things to offer.

Would be surprised if LTP got SST, P1 events etc.

For me, it won’t involve paid international business fares on Qantas anymore - as LTG is already locked away what’s the point?
...so I’m now looking forward to experiencing their product.
I’m sure the smart folks at Qantas loyalty have done their maths on how to make more $. They get to keep selling lots of points to infrequent flyers. They’ve assumed that the loyalty of their higher value customers would always continue to hold but as I now have the discretion to choose how and when I fly, these changes are the final straw for me.
My thoughts exactly. My situation exactly. My reaction exactly. And I really was rusted on to QF - 29,000+ SC rusted on, but now totally disengaged.

For a traveller near retirement with LTG if that CC suits them that CC + LTG would be close enough to having Platinum.

Sure worse seat selection, lower upgrade priority, longer call wait times etc. but getting to visit the FLounge once or twice a year without needing to maintain WP would be nice. When retired I reckon most wouldn’t do many trips overseas a year, and if they are doing many trips they probably can easily afford to maintain WP in retirement.
Which credit card is that please that gives F lounge access?

LTP1 would need at least 450K SCs :p

Probably easier and cheaper to take every political course, fly around and schmooze with all the right people and make a real attempt to become the Prime Minister.
All of that effort and expense to become PM will be faster and cheaper than LTP1....... and you'd end up with Lifetime CL!

The new lifetime platinum is effectively lifetime platinum one, if not in name, as the qualification is set at about 20 times annual platinum one level. (same as life time gold is 20 x 700 and lifetime silver is 20x 350. The benefits are hinted at being more than just platinum. They've called it lifetime platinum but they are targetting platinum one and higher flyers.

I'm certainly suggesting there will be a lifetime platinum one in the future, I'm say that lifetime platinum is effectively lifetime platinum one. (even if not in name, much like QFF is a frequent spender program)

If it was effectively LTP1 they would call it that.

Lifetime status is designed to be hard to achieve without holding a higher status level for quite some time.

Most LTS would have spent some time as SG and most LTG would have spent some time as WP one would think.

If LTP had all the P1 benefits there’d be no reason to keep going for P1 after attaining LTP.

They won't call it LTP1 and nor will they offer it - because they can't implement anything that requires "lifetime QF metal" credits - because they no longer have the data to separate QF and non-QF historical credits, and thus cannot determine eligibility.

Hence just LTP, and benefits may or may not be as published for WP.

Benefits would be at least as good as published for WP. I suspect with the high threshold to get it they will provide additional benefits of value to FF but that don’t cost QF a lot.

It’s possible that if they give LTP higher upgrade priority than WP they’ll just do it and won’t let flyers know that’s what they are doing.

Something that would be nice is if LTP could get Partner Gold either included or if they fly 1200 SCs in the year. They could provide some benefits linked to flying what would have been enough to attain/retain WP if they didn’t already have LTP to incentivise LTP to continue to fly revenue.

QF may decide to simply monitor what changes LTP travellers make to their flying patterns for a while before deciding how many “unpublished benefits” are needed.

I’ve already got LTG, and with my current flying patterns I reckon I can crack LTP at 95....

Yeah nah... no incentive or point to chase it
