First time post but just wanted to ask if there is a way that I can claim lost labour for a flight that was cancelled while I was in the air on the first of 4 legs.
Was suppose to fly Adel - Melb - Laun - Melb - Adel all in one day and while in the air on the Adel - Melb the next leg to Laun was cancelled and bumped not once or twice but three times in which only left me around 90 minutes for my appointment that I had originally allowed 6 hrs for.
Hence I cancelled and got a return flight to Adel.
Qantas have been good a refunded the total amount of the trip and returned me to Adelaide BC but I still lost 9.5hrs of labour.
Is there a form that I can complete and ask for some nominal amount or a couple of Qantas Club passes for the hassle they have created?
Any advise from a seasoned traveller would be appreciated.

I strongly suspect that no you won't be able to claim the loss of a days work.

Flight delays are just part and parcel of business travel and when it's happened to me I've attempted to make the best of a bad situation, eg delaying my flight back and / or pushing meetings back. It suxs, but it happens, and typically the airlines (talking both QF and AirNZ are airlines which I've had this experience with) are pretty good at changing things around at no cost if a delay happens which it's their fault.

Delays happen. You could try contacting customer care but I doubt Qantas would be obliged to give you anything. They may offer you something small (e.g. a Qantas Club Pass) as a gesture of goodwill, or they may not.

To be fair to Qantas, you say they already refunded the entire trip. In my opinion that's enough.

Mattg, happy to have received the full cost of the flight, but was looking at the other costs involved while there including, parking, food, labour which I would not have encountered while staying at office.
Chargeable hours make it hard to invoice out as lost labour cost to a project that was not attended too, thats all.

Mate if you think Qantas is responsible for your lost time then I think you should also put in claims against your local restaurant for making you wait 10mins for your order.

2 words: Travel Insurance. The right policy will cover what you want.

I understand your point and yes it is frustrating. As I said, write to customer care and see what, if anything, they'll offer you. I just think that realistically, the answer is not a whole lot, sorry. (Although I'm happy to be proven wrong ;)).

By the way, I see you're a first time poster. Welcome to AFF. :)

I'd suggest the Ts&Cs of Carriage would suggest you have no chance of claiming against an airline for the items you have described.

of course this all depends on the reason for the original cancellation... but had we been in the EU, sizeable compensation may have been payable, which would have offset some of your costs/loss of work.

I suspect that there may be insurance for the events you have described though loss of profit or earnings is often excluded.

Interesting topic. Would travel insurance cover lost time?

I have lost way too much time waiting in traffic, waiting for buses and trains etc.

Write it off as sick leave.

I'm sure the resident insurance folks could comment but my understanding is everything is insurable if you're willing to pay for it.

Unless you had a custom travel policy it wouldn't cover lost time. Many but not all, cover cancelled meetings if you go somewhere and your meeting doesn't happen.

To the OP, no, forget getting any incidentals back and be thankful you had all your fares refunded.

Happened last tuesday (22nd) flying Sydney to Melbourne. Late leaving Sydney due to fog at Tullamarine. Flew in a holding pattern just outside of Melbourne and then returned to Sydney. Three hours to do the round trip and then wait at the airport. Missed two of my four meetings but Qantas were very good in that they credited my return trip for another day whilst getting me onto a later flight to get to my latter two meetings which basically amounted to a free return flight. The staff at the Qantas terminal were brilliant and couldnt do enough to try to help. They also handed out generous food vouchers which I gave to a family travelling on the flight as I had access to the Qantas Club. I've found that Qantas have always tried really hard to help in times of need when things really aren't in their control. On occassion they've also been very generous with providing FF points. Doubt you would be able to claim lost work hours though, unless you had travel insurance.
