Hi all
So it's finally happened - my luggage luck has run out. On my SYD-HKG-FRA-HEL-LHR trip yesterday only I made it to LHR :( No information as yet - the finnair tracking sit advises to check back later.
So this morning I need to buy a quick change of clothes (I onyl have what I took off in - well and some F pyjamas ;)) and then head to the office - not in a suit - not a great start to my European adventure...
So what do we think is the reasonable daily allowance? I wasnt given any form of comfort pack - I guess as it was a Finnair "problem" BA baggage services don't owe me anything.
Ah well - an interesting start to the week...

Do you have Travel Insurance? When my luggage was delayed recently, I was able to claim $500 from my insurance company

Do NOT trust the finnair tracking site for tracking AY luggage. When mine went astray on AY recently, it still showed as missing AFTER I had got the bag back

Dave

Did you pay with Amex. They have an allowance if your luggage doesn't arrive within 6 hrs.

I beleive the responsible airline is who checked the luggage in at the start of the sectors. If you had no stop-overs then the Syd-HK section carrier is the responsible one.

Perhaps someone else wanted some new Tumi luggage, but could not afford to buy it themselves?

Well officially you are right there NM - yup that was Tumi roller case and Tumi suit bag - honest ;) The problem with Tumi is that they have the tracking code and if it was really Tumi - I might be expected to know that ;)

The bags were a nice samonsite spinner and a no-brand leather suit bag. Could be expensive to replace two suits in London

Re insurance - we do have that through our company - just need to find out about that. As the ticket was paid for on my bosses Diners card and I am the one travelling not sure how that will account for it.

I am not stressing too much at the moment. I will duck out shortly to get some toiletries and then wander across the road to M&S for some Chinos and a Shirt and sundries ;)

Going to be a tricky week with the trip to Paris as well...

Just be careful of the company auditor and make sure you can justify the expenses ;) .

Iberia lost my luggage between DUB-BCN-ATH in mid-May. (I changed from Aer Lingus at BCN.) It was an excruciatingly painful five days trying to get somene at IB who knew what was going on. At Athens airport I had to enquire about compensation. I was eventually told I would be allowed 57 Euro a day but it wouldn't be provided in advance, I would have to claim it back. I was flying straight onto an island in Greece where the cost of a screen-printed cheap-as t-shirt was 11 Euro and a four pack of underwear was 12 Euro (because nobody sells underwear in singles!). The money did not go far at all. On the upside, I paid the minimum $250 on my ANZ Qantas Visa Platinum. Because the luggage ended up being missing for more than 72 hours, I was compensated $800. I've sent in the receipts and received a very timely email back saying the cheque was in the mail.

Timely lesson in why I should always carry at least a days spare clothes in my carry on.

I was taught a phrase a while back by a boss...

Total paranoia is total awareness.

I am always paranoid that the bags are not going to make it, hence I always carry my basic toiletries and spare Reggies, shirt and pants.

My corp travel insurance is pretty good, but if things go missing and I have to put replacements on the company C Card, it is a pain in the butt trying to get through our accounting/expense system.

I have only lost stuff once when in HKG and it turned up the next morning.

A bit OT but I am in SYD QP waiting to fly back to BNE and it is a sh%t fight due to MEL being shut for 4 hours today, and a MEL bound Jetstar Int flight from BKK landing in SYD. There is a lot of JQ pax unhappy as they are not getting a flight to MEL until late tonight or tomorrow !!!!!!

yeah, lets fly Jetstar.....

Why is MEL shut today ?
Fog ? or something else ?

E

Oi - stop taking my thread off topic - I never do that :p

I agree IainF - next time I will be more prepared. I hadnt even thought about it for this trip. On my way home I was not concerned as they can take as long as they want to deliver there.

Someone has already asked me if I am rethinking my JFK-NRT-HKG-SYD flight home to minimise complexity - it's only three flights and only one of them is "unnecessary" ;)

I am in the SYD QP now, not flying anywhere, and it is a zoo. It has taken over half an hour just to get this PC. The 6:00pm SYD-MEL flight has not left yet. The 8:00pm SYD-MEL aircraft has just arrived and will be sent to MEL without any catering. Not sure how many flights will be cancelled as a result of the curfew but I have seen some boarding times well after 10:00pm. All of this because of knock on effects from MEL fog this morning.

Oh and someone please remind me why children should be allowed to use the QP PCs at extremely busy times unsupervised. There were 2 brothers here for over half an hour on separate PCs and made most business people, pacing up and down, very unhappy.

Are there no max waiting times posted? Most lounge have a max of 15 mins in busy periods - should have asked staff to move them...

I am surprised that many business travellers now are not using the free wireless

Back on topic:

The baggage issue may be linked (but I dont think so) to the general baggage catastrophe at LHR at the moment:

BBC NEWS | UK | Heathrow hit by baggage backlog

One of the most bizarre comments is:

A British Airways spokesman said volunteers had been drafted in to help clear the backlog, but it could take several days to sort out.

Umm - shouldnt they be paying people to fix the problems rather than relying on "volunteers"?

Sorry to hijack your thread Simon. I have found this new "Off Topic" smilie and would love to know how to upload it with every "Off Topic" post.

No there is no limit posted on use of PCs anywhere that I could see. The thing that gets me the most was that there was a few people using the space where the PC is located and not using the PC but their own laptop. That is totally rude especially where then are people pacing up and down for half an hour waiting to use a QP PC.

I had time to walk around the QP and there were many people using the free wireless on one side of the QP. Which side is that south? Anyway the one nearest the runway.

JohnK - given my D1ck Turpin style of hijacking most threads I post I was only joshing :)

You can't complain too much about laptop users using the PC space as they are most likely plugging their lappie into the ethernet point because they dont have wireless. Although I carry a spare ethernet cable most days so I can find an empty network point if I can so I dont dothis.

Thankfully I have wireless so I can sit and relax in my seat now whilst checking AFF - I mean doing some work ;)

Dave - what did you use to track the status then? Did you call AY constantly?

I am having trouble getting any useful info at the moment. I called BA baggage services but due to the 23,000 pile of bags at LHR at the moment the only message I get is:

BA Baggage "Services" said:
Currently due to the incompetence of management, staff cuts and stubborn unions we are experiencing a dramatic number of calls. As such we wont be answering the phone any longer. Please log in to BA and lodge another claim and we will ignore that one as well - goodbye....

The only thing AY could do was log into the tracking website and tell me what I already knew - which was nothing...

Calling Diners in about 2 hours to see what the go is.

When mine went missing I reported it at MAN with the company which they use for baggage services. I was given the PIR number and details of a tracking website ( Global something or other ) . To get updates on what was happening I called the company tracking the baggage on their 0870 number .

Thanks that is what I have been doing - just wanted to check that I wasnt missing a trick :)

Although my interaction with the phone service is probably a little briefer than yours ;)

Whilst u wait though, do try n get hold of Insurance Policy details for Corporate insurance and find out what you can get off of them.

I would have doubted that somone elses Diners Club card coverage would be of any help

I expect that ya luggage will reunite with you; next time , I suggest making sure that your luggage is made of sapient pearwood tho :)
