Did anyone watch the segment on channel 7's Sunrise this morning where a lady lost 225,000 FF points following the unfortunate passing of her husband ?

Under the Terms and Conditions of the credit card these points were cancelled by the bank.

I will certainly be looking closely at my cards.

This is fairly common practice. Qantas does this as well.

What I think Qantas does how ever is not cancel the points until notified of the death of the member. Any family transfers that take place after the death and before notification of the are not reversed.

Frequent flyer points have no value attributed to them and thus do not form part of the estate of the deceased.

EDIT

After Mark Riley's deceitful editing of the Abbott footage I wont be watching Ch7 again.

Whilst it's against the rules, I think this is a good reason why someone close to you (that you trust, of course) should know how to get into your FF account. Just in case.

Whilst QF and ANZ may have policies as such and it is the responsibility of the owner to know of such aspects, it is not all the same across the board. For example, with Velocity they will allow the executors of your estate to arrange what to do with your points, so as long as they are notified within 12 months of your death.

But they do have value when it comes to the estate of a divorce participant, go figure!

And I agree with you on the editing issue, journalism in Australia is rapidly becoming a joke, thank god we have the ABC to keep the standards up and pay down :D

I'm sorry... but calling those programs "current affairs shows"??:mrgreen:

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

Same here although the straw that broke the camel's back'.Their standards sure have slipped.

This is a very good wider point, as things go on people will need to leave user names and passwords to all sorts of things. I upload many photos to off site storage and display some on flickr etc. Be nice for these be be available to family and friends.

And look at what happens to people with face book pages who end up having terrible accidents, family and friends need to be able to access this info for the individuals protection.

Personally I couldn't care less if it is against the terms and conditions of the FF program or the credit card reward points. I have earned the points and someone will use them.

Just need to work out a way to leave my details with someone I can trust and in the event of my death all the points are used.

Or of course stop hoarding points and use them now....

give it to your solicitor to hand over to someone afterwards... that's what i'd do.

pity you can only transfer 100k though.. have to say book trips quickly!

You also need to make sure they know not to notify people of your demise.

Also you don't necessarily need to transfer the points as awards can also be redeemed by family members. Something along the lines of the deceased instructed me to buy myself a flight with their points, so I did. Account still open (no notification), account owner directing the use of their points. (Sure there are a few holes in this idea, but nothing bigger than not notifying of the demise of the account holder)

I also think this is an area where QF have no interest in hard enforcement - the cost of points will be small if they and conversely the brand impact will be large.

Given my personal circumstances the first thing I hope my wife would do is use the points to get my family here for the funeral if possible...

It has been done before.;)
