Looming Jet Fuel Shortages?

They've just announced they'll cut 20,000 flights from their schedule between June and October, with exact flights to be published by the end of this month.

Their press release calls it "Lufthansa Group optimises flight offering in summer"

Looks like "optimised" is the new "enhanced".

They say it's to save 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel, but then explain they've cut the routes that weren't as profitable for them. So it's more about the price of fuel, not a shortage of it.
Might work out for us - our planned TRD-MUC leg has gone from an A319 to an A320 since this morning, and come down AUD 150.

Well, its probably both. Shortage and increased costs.

Not a shortage to the point where you can't fly like some doom and gloom are reporting, but more that you can't run a full network ops even if you wanted to.

And flights which are marginal in terms of demand
And a retaliatory action against strike action within city line

........

It's also interesting that of the fuel purchased using the Export Finance Australia underwriting instrument of spot price fuel, as far as I know, none has been for jet fuel - only diesel.

AirAsia have continued to cut more DPS flights, PER-DPS down to 2 daily from 4 for the next two months. Melbourne/Adelaide will stay at 4 weekly

🤷🏼‍♂️

Our flight to Bali yesterday was packed! A single empty seat! (Not air Asia!) dunno why they’re cutting capacity?

Seems to be just combining.

I note once they have combined the PER-DPS down, it leaves very little inventory to be sold. They have pushed people to the day prior and after.

AirAsia group don’t have much cash on the books and the ability to weather a prolonged crisis isn’t great.

Are you flying on an Aussie airline?

Its always been the case that the 3 aussie (JQ VA QF) are chockers and can't get enough capacity whilst their Indonesian and other asian partners struggle to go anywhere near the same level of loads and even Garuda struggles to fill it up despite having a vastly superior product over JQ/VA (about on par with a QF widebody).

Yes, Aussie. I had heard the Indonesian carriers didnt find it as easy to fill seats, but their fares don’t reflect that! Theyre just as high as Aussie carriers! (often higher!)

Datapoint: Had no problem connecting QF MEL-SIN and through to SIN-IST-CAI on TK over two days, yesterday. No aircraft or gate change on any leg. Communication about any option or offer to change flights was zilch, which led to nerves on the lead up to. But the actual run was very smooth, for now

Wife and I are booked to do our Baltics trip that was cancelled due to COVID. We leave 4th June and return 29th August (yes we're retired) Best case scenario is all goes well. Middle scenario is airline cancels before we leave and we get a full refund. Worst case scenario is we get to Europe and then have some kind of problem getting home. ChatGPT was helpful as it says because it's Europe we have good protections but they might be suspending the EUR 600 delay compensation :-( but they still have to organise other flights and hotel and food while we're waiting. I'm pretty sure any travel insurance will screw us over on "Force Majeure" We're flying Qantas/Finnair BTW Perth->Helsinki return
