Hi Guys,

This forum has helped clear up a few mis-understanding about credit cards...

I'm just curious I've been asked by work to find a credit card, so i dont mind the interest rates being high as work pays the card quick... the limit isnt a problem (low/high), the most important thing to me is reward points that I can use to save on day to day expenses (petrol, food etc)..

any pointers would be good.

Hi Guys,

Welcome to AFF! :)

Personally I think the AMEX plat charge card (or credit card)... 1.5 points per dollar up to $200,000 and you can redeem points for nearly anything you want (heaps of gift cards like coles etc too).

Another alternative would be the Altitude Platinum from Westpac, which gives a fairly good point earning Amex, together with a Mastercard (at a somewhat less impressive earning) when the Amex is surcharged/not accepted.

(Of course, if the surcharge doesn't matter to you, company pays and all, the straight Amex may be better)

It a strange coincidence that you ask this. Just yesterday I got a letter from Woolworths about their new Mastercard. Points earn seems ok.

  • [*]3 points per dollar spent on Woolworths Select products purchased at Woolworths or Safeway Supermarkets, excluding online purchases.
[*]2 points per dollar spent on other products purchased at Woolworths or Safeway Supermarkets, BIG W, CALTEX WOOLWORTHS/SAFEWAY co-branded fuel outlets, epump, Woolworths/Safeway Liquor, **** Smith PowerHouse and participating **** Smith Electronics and Tandy stores. Some exclusions apply.(1)
[*]1 point per dollar spent on other purchases.(2)
    [*]
But it is a bit lacking of points burn. All it says is:

And every 4 months, provided you have enough points, you’ll receive a shopping card, to redeem at a great range of participating stores. So, you can reward yourself with everything from groceries, to petrol to electronics.

The great stores being woolworths group. It doesn't say how many points you need but the minimum voucher is $20. edit: in the FAQ you need 3448 points for a $20 shopping card, so $1724 spent at woolies or $1149 of woolies select products.

thank you so much for the replies guys, those cards seem great but i was hoping anual fee of no more then $100

I'm not familiar with the amex rewards cards besides the qantas amex. So I can't comment

Otherwise you could look at the NAB Gold Rewards, 1 point/$ I'm pretty sure that can be used for day to day expense type rewards
There is a NAB flybuys CC - I don't do flybuys (my father in law does), so can't comment on how good that is.

There is a Citibank BP visa - 5% discount on purchases at BP and 1% discount on other purchases. The day to day rewards is built in. But you have to shop at BP exclusively and I guess you can't do private spending on a work CC

Woolworths card that has been mentioned, but probably not good value if you can't do spending at woolworths and again best value is private spending so not good for a work CC.

Basically you want any CC with it's own rewards points rather than a card that sweeps point automatically into a FF program.

Unfortunately not the highest rewards earner but I find the normal Amex Gold credit card, fee free for life as long as I spend $9,000 a year, the best value. As mentioned it is fee free and Ascent Membership Rewards membership is only $80 a year.

On a side note I have been on a 6 month promotion since May offering 50% bonus points which effectively makes it 1.5 points per dollar. I did nothing to instigate this promotion just received a call from Amex one day asking me if I wanted to receive bonus points for 6 months for being a loyal customer....
