Let's talk about Economy X

My father was recently on an A330 flight and no one was in the middle 4 seats of YX. He was booted from a spare seat by the crew after he sat there for a change of scenery following a bathroom break (seems like he had a large person in the seat next to him making it uncomfortable..)

Sat row 3 YX yesterday on the way back from NZ, other than legroom, nothing special. Same dodgey meal, only one drink (different than domestic who go out of there way (sometimes)),, although at least I had a ghost next to me. Overrated and certainly not worth paying for IMO (I didn't).

For the return leg was sat in row 12 - row 10 had a couple of free seats (possible shadows) and was far superior to YX in row 28 with curtains in place covering the toilets.

VA should consider making the front couple of rows YX on the 330s with an increase in pitch (to create a minicabin of sorts) - row 28 should still be sold as an exit row but without the YX perks. This would also simplify meal service as all elites and YX are seated together.

HKG is primarily leisure traffic going into China from what I observed so if they want to take more business away from CX and QF they will need to improve the Y experience in terms of cabin - YX and Y- sections with tighter pitch would probably work to maintain yields.

For me as a lapsed elite with VA (and low status with QF) YX is definetely appealing for the price point to get an enhanced experience on long haul.

A330 - economy X is Row 28. Is this worth it?? There isn't actually any additional recline, is there?

The only issue with row 28 is you rarely get a shadow due to the limited number of YX seats on the 330.

Unlimited legroom and being cancer (recliner) free are winners for me....

Have travelled YX a fair bit recently, and it's brilliant when travelling with small kids. I haven't had to pay for it but I think I probably would with the little ones.

Have also travelled QF Y a lot lately and it makes me appreciate YX so much more!

cheers for the replies. Given its an overnighter flight, Im not sure the extra legroom is really that useful if the recline is still poor. Oh well.

So thoughts....would that make 10A a better seat than say 28A?

I got a SYD-PER coming up and it will be my first run as a WP on the A330-200.

Row 10 is like your typical bulkhead, cancer free but less legroom than in 28A/C/H/K. It is not defined as YX so I assume it is open to anyone at a certain point during the check in process, so you will be guaranteed a seat mate.

Row 10 is my fall back selection when row 28 is not available but it has been about three years since I have actually needed to sit there (I generally try to upgrade on the 330).

Thanks heaps for the advice Pleb.

I don't do many West Coast runs and it has always been the single aisle 800.

I have popped myself in 28K. 👌🏼

Personally prefer Row 10. Being first out is nice, and I dislike the general congregation at the toilets which you get in front of row 28.

On the flight back I have 10A. Going to try both and see which suits me better.

I'm flying Brisbane Sydney middayish on Wednesday and got a call today which offered Economy X for $17.50. I said yes - this probably means the flight is very full and they want my standard economy seat....

That's funny because I just flew LAX-BNE & when I changed seats I was charged an extra $8USD to change my economy X seat to a different spot. The price must've gone up there. Haven't contacted VA to find out why yet.

VA Platinum line had no clue but refunded me $20 for extra charge and CC commission.

Always go row 5, most likely to have a middle seat free and only a few seconds later getting off.... the long walk to the back toilets is a different story though ;)

It would make sense to allow Economy X passengers to use the front loo.

I’m am also a big fan of rows 4 or 5... invariably an empty middle seat, but rarely see that in row 3.
