Vapes have killed 5 or 6 people in the US. .........
5 or 6 people out of how many???? Context is King, my friend!
5/10 is a lot. 5/1,000,000,000 is not....
The current figures suggest somewhere between 10 and 30 million 'vapers' in the USA.

"Vapes have killed 5 or 6 people in the U.S." - Unfortunately, it appears that this is now the norm in human "knowledge" - where anything that is read in a news article takes on its own "truth".

Vic, you are reading news stories designed to make hype and sell news space, and as usual they are ever-more inaccurate regurgitations. Combining some actual facts, and putting them together, would change that quote to "In a country where tens of millions of people use vaping devices, 5 or 6 have recently died where a lung condition that has not yet been understood was involved. Despite intense investigation there has not been any compounds in normal vaping that can explain this. These people were however using their vaping devices to "smoke" cannabinoids (THC), which is not used in normal vaping. There is the real possibility that these deaths have nothing to do with vaping whatsoever."

Geez, no wonder they didn't say that - it is so long winded and boring..........

It will probably come to light that each of the 6 had also flown in economy. So a new headline could be "Flying in economy has killed 6 out of 6 people"

But the majority of vapers in the USA that have developed lung disease from which a handful have died were using THC and not nicotine in their e-cigs.
Funny thay this occurs not that long after cannabis has been legalised in the USA but 15 years after e-cigs started to become popular.
The lung disease is an acute illness not from long term damage. The actual cause is still unknown.

As fascinating as vaping and farting are as topics, here's another outrageous thought:

For domestic flights, two separate tix that can connect are actually treated as such by the airline with regard to luggage.

Seems stupid that when I flew CNS-BNE on one ticket and was booked on another ticket for BNE-CBR the same day, that VA would give me a boarding pass for BNE-CBR at checkin for the CNS-BNE flight, but not check my bags through.

A personal outrage:

Maybe Qantas could, just once, offer sales fares from the Sunshine Coast (MCY) ???????

OMG vaping is taking over this thread as well :(

Just created - so people can discuss and express their qualms somewhere that does not involve other threads :)

I’d like all airlines to fine passengers who play music/videos/FaceTiming etc through their personal device without headphones. Including dear baby watching the wiggles at max volume.

I notice it a lot more in the UK for some reason seems a lot more acceptable there for some reason.

It's outrageous that all Australian marsupials are not allowed on QF / VA as emotional support or comfort animals on aircraft. We should be able to take out favourite pets with us when we fly, just as they do in the USA. I'm sure our fellow passengers wouldn't mind.

I'd love to take my pet Roo on the Red Roo.

I enjoyed the professionalism of JQ and QF this weekend.

Possibly outrageous thoughts for some but no fuss and no delays and SYD T3 business lounge feels like a second home.

I had a very, VERY tasty roo tartare last night; so I support you 100%!

I've started looking at the screen saying 'bring it closer, so I can see it'. They look at me like I'm a madman and I then tell them that 'if you're not going to use headphones and force me to listen I'm going to come and watch it with you'. Amazing how quickly they either shut it off or put on the headphones.

I would like to extend the topic to include getting through security. A few weeks back a nice sub continent type decided the best place to repackage her luggage was between the x-ray machine and the body scanner in SYD Int, she was supported by her partner who collected her stuff as it came out of the x-ray machine and then placed it on the ground.

Then this evening a PAX in ADL who refused to go through the standard body metal detector until he saw his wallet get pushed into the x-ray machine, the PAX seemed to be convinced that the security guard wanted to pinch his wallet.

Well actually I got this from an expert doctor being interviewed on Radio National. That service my taxes pay for that provides me with reliable information. They did mention the THC link, but made it clear that the vapour, the extra fluids introduced to the lung is the issue.

No wonder scientists are ignored by society if people so easily dismiss them as tabloid news.

Yep, outrageous that I mostly avoid the tabloids...

Indeed. We should apply your context to something like the road toll. 1200 out of 26000000...that's not many...why all the major road safety industry?

BTW the USA doesn't even have a population of 1,000,000,000.

I wish I could say the same about commercial radio breakfast shows that are supposed to be funny. I'd rather spend my driving time learning something, than listen to inane banter. Sorry I'm getting truly outrageous now, how dare I not consume...

each to their own..

I know it's a little off topic, however listening to internet radio stations bypasses the trashy stuff. ( I connect my iphone to the car stereo system and then hone in on some good radio stations) The time delay is funny but I get a good choice.

When I first saw this 5-6 thing popping-up in the text at the bottom of whatever morning entertainment TV show the coffee-shop was playing while I was awaiting my coffee, I immediately thought "well that's pretty terrible" … but then I thought about it, how many people are doing this vaping thing vs how many people have died from it? And then, what about illness from it?

So the 1200 road deaths mentioned, is that from a considerably smaller number of road users than vape users in the US?

But then … is there an expectation among vapers that they're getting to smoke without any of the side effects? Has the vaping industry sold them that lie? And another "and then", how many people have died of smoking-related illness in the time covered by the 5-6 deaths in the US?

PS. You won't convince conservatives that the ABC is relatively unbiased way of getting news, facts tends to support a left-wing viewpoint so presenting facts is therefore a tree-hugging unwashed make-love-not-war hippie practise from people that just want to steal your money & give it to people who are homeless because they're lazy.
