Hi guys, flying into LAX from Denver with United and then have a 12 hour wait for my QF flight to Syd, i don't suppose there is a early bag check in available for me so i can clear customs and head to the lounge, or will United check my bags thru to Syd??

Ask at the UA desk on check in if they can check your bag all the way to SYD. If the flights are all on the one ticket it shouldn't be a problem. QF have however said they are not going to play friendly with non-OW carriers if not all on the one PNR (effectively ticket), so you may be out of luck. (I guess it depends on how UA view the situation)

US airports don't have outbound customs, therefore all you would need to do is go through security. Passport checks are done on boarding.

FWIW, with a 12 hour layover in LAX, I'd look at leaving the airport area. LAX is hardly a shining example of an excellent airport, and even with lounge access it will get tedious very quickly. Lots of people rent cars and go for a bit of an explore, that's probably what I'd do.

Just keep in mind the car rental places at LAX are actually a little bit away from the airport, so you'll need to give yourself time to catch the bus, that said the buses are free and provided by the car rental places with their branding / logos all over them.

Cheers for that, i'll see how bored i get!

I thought QF interlined with UA anyway, in which case wont UA just check the bag in Denver all the way to SYD (ie. you wont need to see it until SYD)?

The In-and-Out burger is a popular time waster in LAX, but with 12hrs you could do a whole lot more.

Yeah you can only do so many Burgers, Venice Beach for a beer maybee!
I'm pretty sure UA will chek all the way thru as all flights are on the one ticket.

Interlining agreements (baggage) are generally only valid if the journey is issued as a single itinerary. The interlining agreement is generally based around the ability sell flights of the other carrier and issue as a single ticket, and then baggage interlining follows. So if it sold as a single itinerary then yes its likely UA could check the bags through to the QF flight at the journey origin. But if separate tickets, then unlikely to happen.

Its a Single Itinerary/Single Ticket so we should be sweet!

thanks guys.

Theres a number of threads covering things to do in lax for 6-12 hrs. A search should yield some.

Baggagebsounds sorted.

As others have said, check with UA if they wil tag your bag all the way through. But yes, QF opens at 2pm,a full 8 hours before the first flight so if you can't check it through there, drop it at 2pm.

Sorry to crash this thread, but we are flying AA Las - Syd via LAX.

We leave LAS at 7am and then fly out to sydney at 22:30.

I booked our PER - LAX flights through Qantas but AA flights seperately. To do the booking the whole way through to LAS was an extra $1000 pp - go figure???

Given the seperate Tickets, will AA check our bags the whole way through?

I was told they check them through from PER to LAS but not sure on return.

I hope they do as we will have heaps of luggage inlcuding prams, portacots etc! And ill be making use of my 3 bag allowance in Vegas!

Both AA and QF with check though to another oneworld carrier even on separate tickets.

You'll be fine - just make sure you have printed copies of all relevant tickets each time you check-in.
