I have a slim opportunity to spend a week in Vegas at a tue to thur conference. My plan would be ex Mel on Sunday and ex vegas Friday.

The resort - one block off the strip however at the northern end (opposite LA end), has no accommodation available, so I would need a hotel. Looking at prices on expedia, I can stay at some quite nice properties for less than au $700 for 6 nights, but I have no idea what so ever of Vegas hotels, so any suggestions?

My main requirements...

If you know Jeff, I’m sure he could point out a few places, having been there just a few weeks ago, though I think he’s more FT than AFF.

I would recommend Aureole though if you like your wine, having never been myself, but read about it and sent my dad there years ago.

It would be hard to get a poor hotel in Las Vegas. We have stayed at Luxor,TI,Caesars Palace and Bellagio and experienced no room noise despite the properties being super busy places.
Luxor can be very cheap most nights as it is a more family friendly place.
Caesars has great shopping if you want anything up market like Tumi luggage or accessories.
All hotel properties have lots of drinking, gambling and sex going on so you could get a noisy neighbour but it is generally ok. I have had noisier rooms in Sydney.

"The Strip" is actually north/south. Which end are you staying at?

South (down near LAS airport) you've got MGM Gramd, Luxor, NYNY, Exaclibur, Mandalay Bay and Tropicana (as well as Hooters if you really want that!). It's a long long hike from one end to the other, although the Monorail does go from MGM up to the Hilton (which is off-strip).

Down the other end, you've got a lot more choice. I'd suggest staying somewhere towards the centre of the strip. Possibly The Mirage, Wynn/Encore, Venetian/Palazo.

No shortage of good properties, and as other posters have mentioned, i've never had a problem with noise (unless you get a neighbour on your floor who decides to live up to "Sin City"'s reputation of course).

I'd also suggest trying Priceline if you're game. The "Name Your Price" option is actually quite useful. Specify an 'area' of vegas and the 'star' rating of the property and name a price you want to pay per night. You'll then be told of the hotel. It's a gamble but hey it's Vegas. Keep in mind there are *very* few actual 5 star hotels in Vegas, which limits the options it will spit out at you. This may/may not work for you but it's a good way of getting a dirt-cheap midweek room (when they are cheapest).

Miss you by a few weeks, i'm off there in November for a spot of Poker:)

I was there in early November last year and stayed at the Mirage. It was great. The only problem with any of the major Vegas hotels is the walk through the km's of casino just to get to the lifts for your room. If you want quiet though, the walk through casino's certainly isn't quiet!

And if you want to avoid aussies, don't go to Vegas. It's full of "Tourist" Aussies, as in "omg look at the size of this Nev!!! It's soooo hoooouuuuge!". I know it's Vegas, but man we have a contingency of first-time travellers there:)

Vegas is fun .. but full of first timers to the world of sin.
Luxor is where I stayed and ended up in a penthouse suit when the guy in the floor above us flooded half the floor from his spa.

MGM a couple of months back, excellent value at USD55 per night for 4 nights.
Luxor is another I like to stay in.

Watch for the deals, there are many.

I usually stay at MGM. It's great. Particularly like "The West Wing". It's new and funky.

Didn't like the Luxor (got food poisoning from their restaurant). The Icnlinators are a novelty, but it's a very very basic hotel. Nothing flash. The pyramid itself is pretty awesome though:)

you can't go wrong at most Vegas 4/5 star hotels. My favs are Wynn, Encore and Bellaggio in the 5 star rank but Mirage is great for the pools and location.

Last time I checked on Priceline and bidding forums, the discount gained over booking outright following promo links was neglible if not to your disadvantage - I would recommend avoid Priceline for Vegas.

Mid October will be rather warm so best choose a hotel that has nice pools. Mirage certainly does. Maybe check out Google Earth to see the size of all hotel pools!

We have stayed twice in the MGM Signature apartments. Spent 10 days in LAS there in May. Have a look on tripadvisor, it is No.2/3 of the best picks in town to stay. True a bit of a walk to the strip, but great as it has no casino on site. I find it heaven to come back to after a day in sin city. Very quite, but about can be up to $250 a nite. However, has deals from time to time.

You want quiet and you're going to Vegas??? One of the biggest oxymorons there is.....after the word 'honourable' preceeding the name of a politician.

I stayed at New York New York opposite the MGM Grand but found the quietest place was Denny's although it still had the piped elevator music in the background but wicked desserts!

I stay at the Hilton and I like it. It's cheap as mid week. Monorail is handy for getting around. It's not on the strip but the strip is easily accessible.

Last stayed at Harrahs. Not as flash (new) as the others but decent and quiet rooms, and fairly close to the middle so relatively convenient. It was the best value at the time.

If you want pools (bit cold at that time of year) and other attractions though, it's not the place, but you can still visit them anyway.

V well said ozbeachbabe. Vegas and quiet do not go together. For a good nights sleep, party hard, stay up late and sleep in.

well, the slim chance has changed to GOING, flights booked (through AKL) and I am in the process of booking a hotel...

I have decided on a suite at Harrahs or an Exec room at the Hilton - Flashware thinks I should get some honours action happening...!

The conference is at Tuscany Hotel & Casino, so a short walk from a monorail stop, I'm reasonably happy with the hotel choices so far unless someone offers some excellent advice as to not staying there. Both hotels suggest quiet rooms - time will tell.

Mon 18th October, I wouldn't mind travelling to PHX to visit a friend (is that the right airport code for Phoenix?) I looked on aa.com.au but the price was way out of this world! Any suggestions? LCC don't matter, in AM out late late PM

cheers

In Las Vegas in mid October it will be as usual with more than hotel room doors banging.
Southwest.com is how we have gone to Phoenix and it should be an ok price that you can do yourself.
It is hard to get a bad hotel and you should look at the shows because some are world class. That would be Lasvegas.com for a start.

Going to las vegas late october also, for SEMA SHOW ,If you want quiet ,try Embassy Suites at the convention centre on Paradise road, extra large suites, free buffet breakfast, free afternoon managers reception ,food & drinks, part of HILTON CHAIN,Monorail across the road.Check out their website, also have special rates for auto club members.

For that itinerary, only look at Southwest. Other alternatives mostly go through connections (eating up more time), and/or cost more. SW have a 0625/0735 -> 2105/2210 pair which is the best you'll get if you want to maximise your time, plus a few other choices throughout the day. Price is around $160US at the moment.
