Anyone had any experiences with Lan first class in their A340?

I have been trying to find cabin photos on the internet but have not had much luck.

Yes.

Tried them about a year ago on the short SYD-AKL hop.

It's Row 1, and has 5 seats across IIRC. Curtains block you off from the J cabin.

Found the seats to be very nice. Food was nothing special (catering SYD-AKL is pretty bad for J / F with Lan, but I am told improves greatly on the AKL-SCL leg).

Staff friendly. Nice wines and beers onboard.

Not worth the premium over J for that hop definately.

I think Kiwi Flyer has done a trip report on one of these flights. I'll try to find it...

Yes, I'm taking them for the AKL-SYD hop.
It's a choice of Lan in F, or QF in J.
Interestingly, both checkmytrip and expertflyer show an incomplete seat map - only shows 3 seats in F
Pity F seats aren't single by the windows

You may find the Qantas F fare cheaper than the Lan F Fare (Qantas codeshare on the LA flight). I did - it was about $800 cheaper at the time...

The broken seat map is to do with the codeshare arrangements. Qantas has 1/2 (?) of the F/J/Y seats to sell, and so do LA. If you do a seatmap on the LA flight number you get the LA seats for sale, Ditto if doing a seatmap on the Qantas number.

IIRC (and this is stretching my memory), it's 2 -1-2 in F. There might be a 6th F seat in the middle, but not really sure.

I'm booking it as part of an AONE4, but thanks for the tip.
And certainly booking the QF codeshare for the status bonus!

The Lan website says there are 5 seats, so your memory serves you correctly.

For a AONE, definately worth the F over J.

More S/C's and FF points. The seat will beat any Qantas one on offer (bar maybe 744 plane), but the food as I indicated is below par vs Qantas. The magazines are mostly in Spanish. Great fun to look at pictures in a Time magazine :D IFE is both Spanish and English.

The staffers mostly speak both Spanish and English. So you shouldn't have any issues there.

It's a short flight and in F on LA, they will encourage you to sleep. I know I did once they closed the shades and plied me with a lot of good alcohol :D

If flying Lan, see if you can score an amenities pack from the staff as you leave. They wouldn't give me a F one, but gave me a J one instead. Contents are similar to the Qantas one, but still another amenity bag to add to the collection/use.

Lan website says that the A340 has had a retrofit recently - and the Lan website looks like flat beds! (but a bit hard to tell)

The seats I remember were flatish, or very close to them.

Hmmm. Maybe I have a warped memory of seats :)

I did sleep very well. The alcohol definately helped, but still, it is hard to sleep on uncomfy seats...

I remember the seats as being flat also. I don't know if they were exactly horizontal, left my spirit level at home on that flight :p However they were definately a 2-1-2 seating and very comfortable (would say more so than QF F but I have only spent 3hr in each.)

Again my catering wasn't great, but I think that this was more due to LA forgetting my "special" meal, and rushing me what I think was a Y mains. The fruit was excellent. :)

Mal.

I think the photos might be deceptive.

They may look like mere J seats, but once you hit the recline button they convert into a nearly flat comfy seat.

As above, don't recall the specific details of the seats that I had. Those seats look familiar, but then a lot of aircraft seats look familiar and morph into each other. One of the byproducts of too many aircraft types / airlines.

Not me - I've only flown it business class a few times, never in first.

Incidentally EK's current sale has first for 1300-odd NZD return - includes limo transfers both ends both ways saving over 200 in taxi fares (there's also specials in economy and business - not sure if this helps you serfty for Auckland Do).

Did the LA SYD-AKL-SYD again this week. F is one row 2-1-2 and seats appear slightly bigger and recline more than J.

Differences are:
1. Cabin staff in F much nicer than J staff. J staff have always been surly the several times I flown this route on LA.
2. To AKL food in F is poor, food in J is woeful. J gets you half a sandwich.
3. From AKL food is reasonable in F, adequate in J.
4. Plenty of wine available in F and provided with a smile. J staff frown at PAX requesting champagne so early in the morning.
