LA, London routes spell trouble for Qantas | Business | News.com.au

NATIONAL carrier Qantas Airways Ltd says the airline is not as profitable at the moment because business has fallen on key routes to Los Angeles and London.

But Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce says Qantas expects passenger numbers to improve on those routes once the global economy recovers and the business market picks up.

No real surprise as this has been discussed for a while now.

From memory QF has been saying for a while now (07 if I remember right) that dom has been keeping int going.

I think Qantas were making a stack of money on LA but now that Delta and V Australia are now flying the route this is made it all a bit tougher.

If its not high fuel then its softening demand; its as almost airlines can't win at the moment.

Seems to have been like that in living memory - airlines always seem on the verge of bankruptcy or crisis...

I needed to travel to NYC in June 2008. Booking in February, the cheapest fares were ~$2500 and ~$3300 if I wanted upgradeable fares. I booked LONE4's instead.

This June, the cheapest fares were $1100 - and upgrades common place for those with status travelling on "Non upgradeable" classes.

No real surprise as this has been discussed for a while now.

They have now extended the "No First Class" service on some of the MEL-LHR-MEL flights from the end of October to at least well into December. We just got downgraded for our leg LHR-MEL on Dec 15. Still retain the seats up front, and expecting some FF points to be returned soon.

Sad in a way, as we normally fly BA in F, and wanted to compare the QF product for a change. Now we will probably never know.

We did get the offer to transfer to the later 22:00 flight via SIN but it gets into Melbourne early in the morning, and did not want to just jump on another jet an hour or so later to return to Perth.

PER is not well catered for when it comes to premium seats, otherwise we might have jumped ship and come home from SIN in J.

I wonder if that means I have a chance of being upgraded to PE on my flights in November.

I'm QP NB at the moment, so I guess not.
QP status may be enough - my seat mates on an upgraded to J AKL-LAX flight in June were called to the QP service desk and issued with new J BP's. (I was op-upped on check-in for that flight).

Awesome. Fingers crossed! That being said, I've got bulkhead seats for most sectors and 80K on the A388 so won't be terribly upset if nothing happens

good one - I checked out why 80K was good, but also noted that in row 70, there is only three seats in the middle with a warning - dont know why - maybe a pole holding up the second storey<g>

The space where 70D would have otherwise been is the crew rest emergency exit hatch. 71D is therefore an awesome seat if you want legroom in economy! :)
