KUL SIN lounge crawl 7 June 2015

Now that I'm finally in a mood to post this...

Was at Palm Beach last week, and the services have seriously gone downhill. It takes 45 mins for every simple request, the dinner ended up taking about 3 hours. Prices have gone up as well, ended up spending $90 SGD per person which is borderlining on ridiculous. If anything, we certainly can't waste 45 mins waiting for things if we are going to make the lounge crawl works. At one stage, I told them that I definitely will not be taking 16 "high spending" customers to their establishment, and they don't seem to quite care either, so we're on the lookout for another place for lunch.

On a brighter note, Penegal has passed on some suggestions, and I'll investigate these when I'm grounded (eg ensure that they are indeed open when we want to visit, etc). Not to worry though, we still have 11 months to get this sorted.

And so I've been sitting in the lounge since 5.45pm. It was quite busy, but at 8.45pm, it's eerily quiet. It helps that there are no more QF metal flight until Qf6 in 2.5 hours time.

Tried both dishes on the menu tonight. A Italian style chicken dish and an Asian beef dish. Personally I preferred the latter one but it can go either way for others. Not too special but good enough. The creme brulee is back for another round, however.

It's not a bad place to be when it's quiet, although you still need to put up with the modern style ceiling (aka unfinished). Drinks selection is also a little limited.

Let's see how the lounge goes in the next couple of hours... I'm on the 1am flight out. Not sure if this qualifies as an abuse, but I had the choice of either finding my own dinner or go through the early check-in with 3K and having a free dinner here.

Update at 10.05pm. Lounge getting a bit more lively again. Not sure how many people are on which flight, but there's enough to fill up half of QF6 if they were all on it.

A long weekend. I will keep this in mind, but it is so far in the future I can; commit just now

I have a funny feeling this particular event is going to be very popular.

Well, for me, the Singapore part, anyway. Not much lounge crawling to be had in KUL.

There are enough lounges to make it worthwhile in the morning. And for me the clincher is hotels are cheaper in KUL over SIN.

Andy speaking for myself I'd be just as happy with cheap and cheerful if the food is good and the atmosphere is Singaporean rather than Australian :) So don't feel obliged to look for a high end place if a food court would be just as good (although as an ang mo I'm scared of chicken feet, pig's trotters etc ;) )

You and me both, Anna. I don't eat spare parts either and very happy with hawker/food court :p. There's a fantastic place by the mangrove in Klang (about 45 mins from KL) which serves superb chilli crab. I haven't been there for more than 10 years but if it's still there, it's definitely worth a visit. They serve very good butter prawns too.

I've been to a couple of seafood places in Klang. Well worth a visit....

Perhaps we should organise the KUL dinner (KL/Klang) and SIN lunch together? We first decide what food we want to compare (eg chilli crabs and satay as mentioned by Aeolus), then find somewhere in both locations where those food are well regarded.

Booked my last JASA for this. QF5 on 3/6 and QF6 on 7/6. Will worry about the SIN-KUL flights later once I decide whether to fly Jetsar or MH.

No contests for satay - I'm putting all my money on KUL!
Those over-nighting in KUL can (and should) visit Jalan Alor on the night before. :)

And I'm definitely in on this... it's my own backyard after all. :D

Depending on numbers, I can also organise a shuttle bus to/from the airport in SIN for the lunch. Either way, allow for $80 SGD (roughly $70 AUD) for a seafood lunch including chilli crabs plus an alcoholic beverage, and transport to/from the airport. Costing is to the generous side of things so there should be no surprises at the end unless we choose drink excessively. :)

Define excessively.:D

Just had a weekend in KL. I tried to Suss out the best place for Chilli crabs for the lounge crawl. From my research, a place called Fatty Crabs came highly recommended. I booked and trekked out only to be told there were no more crabs that night. Grrrrr. A bit more research and I settled on Mei Keng Fatt at Ampang. A Chilli Crab will set you back 78 MYR, 2 crabs 150 MYR. If you want the big Australian King Crabs you're looking at $120. MYR per kilo. The crab was superb. A chilli crab, fried rice, a couple of big tiger beers and some fried buns to mop up the chilli set me back around 125 MYR. Much cheaper than Jumbo Seafood at East Coast Seafood in SIN, but there is no view. Still, one to consider. I am just about to head out to Zaina Satay before heading back to KLIA. No sense in getting there too early, as my only option for lounge access is to use my priority pass. Last time I fly 3K.
