Due to company rules, we are changing to best available. This means my next few BNE-LAX flights will likely be virgin. I will get lounge access as tickets are business class, but onward travel is economy on United/COPA, which is star-alliance.

I'd like to get some star-alliance status of this change, so I was thinking on crediting to Krisflyer. Will my plan work?

I have no need to VA gold or better, as all domestic flights are still with QF.

I don't think VA flights count towards SQ status unless you're booked on a SQ code.

Here's a reason to credit to SQ - for some reason VA J get's 200% mileage on SQ - more than J on SQ!!
If you're going to be flying VA J long haul a fair bit then sign up for PPS under krisflyer - just in case you get there;). It's like a double dipping type programme.

I don't know for sure about the status thing but I had a couple of NZ flights which I then just put in my Krisflyer # and they credited ok (maybe barring one domestic which I forgot to read the fine print as the class was excluded). I'm assuming as long as you put in your VA # and it shows up on your boarding pass that it should credit to SQ.

If you're after status then I can understand accruing to SQ but if you're after SQ points (KF miles for reward redemption) then you have to weigh up the fact you'd get a gold bonus from VA and whether that may be more beneficial despite the 1.35 transfer loss. I haven't done the math and probably won't until I need to. I'm planning on sending VA J domestic to SQ in future but I don't have anything booked currently.

Edit: What am I talking about? It's 200% no math needed! (Should beat a 50% bonus on VA and then SQ transfer?)

I think you are right. SQ code needed for elite miles, and these are only earned on codeshare.

Found the following below on SQ Website.

"Status levels are determined by Elite Miles. Unlike KrisFlyer Miles, which can be redeemed for flights or upgrades, Elite Miles are exclusively used to measure your status."

I wish VA would just get brought-out by a decent Star-Alliance member!

Buggar I have that spacebar problem if I am replying with quote.

My flight was bought via NZ site NZ metal and I just put in KF # at check-in. It says in my KF account I've earned elite miles also. The amount of elite and KF miles you earn from flying are the same. I've earned a few more KF miles through the travel SIM card for phone so that amount differs. Why does this differ for VA? Like I buy an NZ flight then put my VA # in and it accrues sc and points to VA:confused:

Edit: Aahhhh just found the codeshare destinations on the SQ site and LAX isn't one of them.

Could you fly NZ J and then credit to SQ to get *A Gold. I don't know what the promo's are currently but I've read on here they have some pretty good ones for Oz.

2nd edit: Sign up for an AMEX then Shangri-La to get to gold then 3 flights on SQ gets you SQ gold. Must link accounts within 4 months of doing the 3 flights.

PPS is spend on SQ flight numbers only

Type first read later:oops:

I just reread the double dipping bit - so has to be SQ metal but can credit to another FFP as well as accrue to PPS value.

Hmmm, if you're SQ silver already is that from taking SQ flights? In which case the AMEX Shangri La promo would be a good tie up. Still have to fly 3 SQ flights. Or with QF Platinum could you status match to Air NZ if you do some TT flying or well you could say you would fly them to LAX. No spend required, just a good email, activity statement and crossing fingers?
