Hi all,

Just want to know of your thoughts on my situation. Recently I booked a flight with United Airlines (part of the Star alliance) to fly return from Sydney to San Francisco. I flew to San Francisco on United and everything went according to schedule.

One the way back from San Francisco to Sydney I was put on stand by for my United Flight because United oversold their tickets. I was advised to check in and wait at the gate to see if there would be any available seats at the last minute. There were no available seats. In the end I was FORCED to reschedule my flight because of United's mistake. They ended up putting me on an American Airlines/Qantas flight which would leave the next day. I had to fly from San Francisco to Los Angeles on United and then AA/Q from Los Angeles to Sydney.

I waited around six weeks to see if my frequent flyer miles would be credited to my krisflyer account and it hasn't so far. I called up krisflyer and explained to them my situation and they said that my united miles would be credited to my kris flyer account from Sydney to San Francisco, and from San Francisco to London. My flight from Los Angeles to Sydney would not count because I flew on a non star alliance airline. So my question to you all, is whether or not I can actually get my miles credited from my Los Angeles to Sydney flight. If I can, whom should I get in touch with. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I would write to United Airlines, with a copy to Kris Flyer, indicating the situation (include copies of the ticket, and AA/QF boarding passes). You should ask UA to arrange the crediting of the original SFO/SYD UA flight details to your KrisFlyer account.

Kiwi Flyer should be able to shed more light on the subject, given his expertise over on Flyertalk.

Hi and welcome to AFF azurenights :)

You need to get United to confirm to Kris Flyer that you were INVOLUNTARY rebooked. You should then get miles as if you flew the original itinerary. In my experience in these situations the miles never come through automatically (on any airline/FFP), however, you should be credited for the original itinerary.

You should also have gotten some compensation from United for the IDB (Involuntary Denied Boarding) - $ or vouchers on top of them paying for hotel and meal costs for the extra night.

Hope this helps.

I believe that when the denied boarding is involuntary, the compensation is required to paid in cash. Voluntary bumps can be whatever the airline is able to use to entice people to change - vouchers, upgrades etc.

But when it comes to involuntary bumps they look for any excuse to not have to pay out cash compensation, including finding a reason that you did not meet their published requirements such as late check-in, not being at the gate on time etc. But if you meet all their requirements and they have oversold the flight and you get bumped involuntarily, then make sure they pay you on-the-spot in cash.

Thank you for all your replies. I was involuntary kicked off and yes I did get compensation, $1100 USD in travel credit, not bad I say.

I contacted United, after reading your posts, and they said to me to contact Krisflyer and ask Krisflyer to contact United about my United Situation. I feel like I'm going in circles about this, what should I do next? Call Krisflyer or Call United? I prefer calling someone, make the appropriate arrangements, then send the documents. Thanks for any advice.

I'd call United as you need them to provide proof of involuntary rebooked. Once you have that, then follow up with Kris Flyer to get the miles.

In the end United wrote me a letter stating that I was involuntarily booked. I mailed the original copy of that letter, with my United Boarding Passes. However, Krisflyer is only recognising the flights that I took with United, and still not giving me miles on the flight that I took with Qantas. Is there anything else I can do? or should I forfeit the miles from Los Angeles to Sydney?

I don't envy you azurenights. What a hassle!

I think United, whilst they eventually got you there, and compensated you, are the ones who should be going to Krisflyer and organising the points credit for you, rather than just giving you a letter. After all, they are the ones responsible for mucking you around, and they're part of *A along with SQ.

They're the ones you paid money to, so they're the ones that should rectify the situation for you, rather than just writing a letter and effectively fobbing you off. I don't believe you should forfeit miles (though others may disagree with me).

So I would hassle United on that basis. Good Luck!

You need to have a look at the T&Cs of the Kris Flyer programme and see what it says regarding rerouting on ineligable airlines. The AA scheme, for example, explicitly says that there is no mileage entitlement in this case ( though since getting miles from AA is candy stealing, they seem to make a lot of 1 time exceptions ). QF do allow original routing credit when rerouted involuntarily.

Check what Kris Flyer have to say on the matter

Several years ago I was booked on a United flight to LAX out of Sydney. I got a phone call from UA the morning of my departure to say that the plane that I was meant to fly out on didn't arrive because the flt got cancelled in LAX because of a technical problem.

UA transferred me onto a QF going to LAX (it was at the time that they were flying via Tahiti) and I got UA FF miles as well.

This does not mean that SQ have the same policy though. What matters in this case, is SQs policies in giving original routing credit.
