KLM matching Status

Thanks for posting this! I don't have much status to match (Cathay Pacific Marco Polo Silver), but it expires in August (and I won't have enough to keep it going). Here's hoping the KLM deal extends it to the end of the year - I might fly to the US (with Delta) or Europe (with KLM) :D

As it turns out, Singapore in French is spelt Singapour.

Anyone who has ever been caught outdoors between about 3-5pm on an average Singapore afternoon would probably agree that the French have it correct :D

Did anyone get a confirmation email after submitting?

It took a few goes (page kept dropping out) but I believe mine went through, however no confirmation and no email to my "tell a friend".

No confirmation, but the fact that it moved onto the 'spam your friends page' suggests it went through. I expect activity will happen Monday, as I don’t expect them to be that keen to process things over the weekend.

I signed up for the promotion, I will be in Europe for 2 weeks in June and might be able to use the status match, I was looking at flying some Low Cost Carriers but if I can get KLM/AF for a similar price I might be able to use the status.

Nice, same for me as well.

Ok, I managed to resist the temptation for 3 whole days ;)
Now I've caved in and sent off the picture. I am going to Europe in Sept with some vague plans that this might be useful for.
Thanks for posting :D

I have applied as well. I have been close to FB Gold when I lived in Europe but never made it. Was Silver for quite some years though. Now I will finally get the Gold :D
Unfortunately I'm not WP yet, couldn't they have waited till September when I should be WP :)

They're certainly taking their time with this! I did mine Friday lunch time (CST) and still nothing yet. Here's hoping it's done in the next few days as I have an AF flight coming up end of the week and it'd be nice to have benefits:)

I could understand they might have had a few thousand requests for status matches, but it does seem a little slow. You’d think if you were going to offer such a broad status match, you’d put the right amount of staff on it.

I wonder how AF/KLM can verify a person's status with another airline? I presume they do not and cannot. Then this leads to the though that any person with somewhat good photo editing skills could manipulate a WP card or equivalent, and go for a status match. ;)

A similar issue occurs across almost every kind of status match offer (except for specific instances, e.g. the early days of the NZ Slice-It promotion; or, when Star Alliance had a global match HK to *G, some members were asked to produce HK citizenship evidence).

I guess AF/KLM may or may not do "random checks". But this is now pure speculation.

Whilst we could very well get away with what you said, I'm sure many of us would only take advantage of these offers in good faith and not through dishonesty. I realise this means little for the integrity of the offer and system, but beyond that...

But what's the real cost to AF/KLM if someone fakes membership? The cost of producing and mailing a platinum card and pack to that person, who if not a frequent flyer anyway, probably won't use any of the benefits and cost the airline any more. It's cheap, targeted marketing in a way.

Just to let you know that for AF as Altea carrier it is easy to check QF status as both loyalty programs are hosted in Amadeus. One entry and they know your status... If you have status with a program that is not hosted in Amadeus could be trickier to check.

Would the rules for using the system not discourage such usage though? I’d imagine they pay a license fee that has certain conditions attached?

nah not really. Anyone with Amadeus access can do the entry to display the status attached to an Amadeus hosted Frequent Flyer program (LH, AF, QF, ...). This is how itineraries generated by a TA show your status (if you ever paid attention to that that is :D )

Are you saying that dishonesty is alright if it doesn't have any perceived (not proven) impact?

AF/KL are marketing this to people who are frequent travelers and want to foster a new relationship with them. They aren't doing this for the benefit of everyone, nor are they doing it for those who want to be dishonest, I would imagine!

Where did I say that dishonesty is alright??

What I am saying is that AF/KLM in rolling out this campaign would have considered the risks associated with dishonest people and would have concluded that the cost to them is probably minimal and outweighed by the benefits.

Grab the status match even if you don't intend to use it. At least at some point in the future, you can match yourself back to some form of *A or oneworld status.
