Kiwi Lawyer attempts to claim tax refund on $0 Jetstar fares

Stuff article explains it all but in short this really bored and dumb Kiwi lawyer decided to purchase the return for free tickets that JQ offers with a max bundle, call and cancel for a voucher on the first flight only leaving the second flight in place. He's now claiming they owe him a refund on the Australian taxes of the $0 fare totalling about $3500.

I really hope Jetstar both wins and bans him. Not only does it ruin it for everyone but also makes Jetstar tighten up restrictions on sales like these.

Best case scenario for the person involved is that he wins however if they do ban him the whole dumb idea will backfire as he could get banned from one of the only two domestic mainline carriers in New Zealand (and across the Tasman the QF group now makes up a huge percentage of seats).

In some jurisdictions non revenue fares have nil or little real govt regulatory taxes/fees. Once you add an airline cost~fare(e.g. YQ) the govt regulatory taxes/fees apply~jump.
Which is why in USA can have just $5.60 tax, on some award flights, that cannot be avoided. " A September 11th Security Fee of $5.60 per one-way trip, per passenger". The USA award flight is treated as non revenue.

The banned list seems to be shared across the Qantas group and Emirates given how tight of partners they are, I can't remember if it was on AFF or FlyerTalk but I recall seeing a post from someone who was banned on Qantas but trying to fly Emirates without luck.

Maybe he’s trying to make the point that the return isn’t actually ‘free’? That at least a component of it has been paid for by a higher one way fare than normal?

So maybe the upshot is that we no longer have ‘return for free’ sales, but sales that are accurately reflected in the fares? That’s probably a good thing.
