Jury Service

Depends what state you live in.

I did it many years ago and got work to ask if I could go on shorter trials.

I hated it
I'd get sick of so much talking I think. I'd fall asleep. And I'd want to ask questions of various witnesses that I reckon should be asked but may not be. But can't so would be so tempted to go home and google which is of course banned.

Those jurors who took part in that horrendous Mushroom trial deserve a medal. So long but quite interesting in parts.

I'm Melbourne based so would have to make my way into the Melbourne court daily.

It's unfortunate that my business travel has dropped off a cliff this year, I'm yet to set foot in an airport in over ten months. Last year I was travelling overseas on average every two months (sometimes monthly) so would've had a good reason to be excused.

Seems the 'verdict' is that being selected for jury service has more 'cons' than pros to the entire experience.

I dunno! I mean I guess there’s the inconvenience… but on the other hand… you get 1, 2, 3 weeks off work… maybe more! No loss in income. And get to do something different!

!st time I was called the defendant's solicitor had acted for me on a conveyancing matter. As soon as I pointed that out the judge dismissed me.
2nd time I showed them a flight I had booked and was taken off the list.
3rd time I was over 75 and had my name removed permanently

Been called twice, was travelling OS both times and couldn't attend. Haven't been called since, over 15 years.

MIL served on a jury once, I think it was for Leonard John Fraser. She needed to stay overnight for their deliberations and I remember the trial being somewhat related to Natasha Ryan (the girl in the cupboard).

I have disappointed some of my team members in the past by not excusing them from jury duty.

In NSW you firstly receive a Notice of Inclusion advising that you may be called on during the upcoming 12 month period.
I have received this notice of inclusion 7 times! Within each 12 month period I have received sometimes 4 notices to attend court. I really can't believe that it is random selection.
Over these many years I have attended court of more occasions than I recall and waited around only to be discharged; have provided proof of travel to be exempted, have claimed exemption due to work requirements (during covid only).
A few years ago I couldn't escape it any longer and was selected for and served on a jury. Was a 2 week trial. Great, I thought, that's me done!
But no, 2 years ago I received another Notice of Inclusion !

The Juror is supposed to be at the top of our legal system. They make the decision. The prosecution, defence and judge there to persuade, assist, ensure legal process.
My experience was different, treated less fairly than a base grade clerk on a temporary transfer to the court (ok, I was also envious of the judge's free parking while I was expected to catch a bus).
I think worthwhile doing once for the experience. But even though retired, after doing it once I made excuses the next few times and haven't been bothered since.
