JQ confirms 787 to be based in SIN first

Jetstar passengers can look forward to experiencing the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with Jetstar on-track to be the world’s first LCC to welcome the aircraft into its fleet. The B787-8s will gradually replace the Airbus A330s currently used on Jetstar’s long-haul international routes from Singapore to Melbourne, Auckland and Beijing. The new aircraft will be configured with Business and Economy Class cabins. The Jetstar Group is expected to receive the first of 15 B787-8s as part of an order of 50 Dreamliners by parent company, the Qantas Group. Singapore travellers will be among the first Jetstar passengers to fly on the Dreamliner from its expanding Southeast Asian hub. Group CEO Bruce Buchanan said Jetstar already had three of its 11 long haul aircraft based in Singapore and expected this number to grow over time, particularly as its B787s were delivered.

I can only hope that they’ll do something more with their J product in the 787’s. They have a real opportunity here to be an LCC with a premium hard product that more people fly… will they stuff it up?

Will be nice to fly JQ35 between SYD and MEL on a 787 too

It makes sense that they will use them on their longest routes first. Also as a counter against Scoot.

But I also wonder if it is also being used to entice get some pilots (Jetstar and Qantas) to switch over to being Singapore based Jetstar. On a recent flight I was seated next to a NZ based Jetstar pilot and he said that most of the Singapore based pilots are Kiwis and Aussies. I could see the 787 being used to encourage more pilots to switch if they want to fly the newest plane you have to switch over to Jetstar.

Doesn't surprise me. Most of the captains on the 3K flights I have taken had Australian accents!

I guess delivery dates are still in a state of flux.

tonyhancock will be happy with my choice of aircraft.

I still can't help but think Qantas would grow if it got the new fleet, but instead it lumbers on with older product and wonders why pax won't pay a premium.

I hope the 744 refurb works for them - pity the 330s/763s aren't getting new product too...

Perhaps if I'm still in SIN by then, I could get myself onto its inaugural flight. But then, i can also imagined it being delayed/cancelled...

I would not expect to see too many of these positioning segment lasting into the future as the JQ fleet gets larger.

I concur. Aircraft are often swapped between "cycles" at common outstations (eg an aircraft operates SYD-DPS-MEL in lieu of a SYD-MEL positioning move). B747s and A380s get swapped at LAX and LHR in this manner.

Both QF and JQ will continue to have domestic legs of international sectors as logistically they make a lot of sense, and seem to be very popular as well, JQ use them to consolidate multiple origin flights while swapping aircraft at the same time.
