Hi all

I'm a teacher in Western NSW, taking 5 secondary kids down to Sydney in September. They booked after they found the Qantas Link specials that were on a couple of weeks ago. This will be the first time any of them have flown and they're very enthusiastic / nervous. Don't quite know how I'm going to be hold 5 sets of hands as we come into land!!:D

They want to join the QFF program, but currently, the charges are $80+. I called Qantas this morning and they said that, from time to time, there are specials. However, I've never seen them.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how the kids could join up for free? $80+ they just don't have. They're flat out fund raising for the trip and this would be counted as non-essential.

Thanks for your help:D

You guys and gals are wonderful. No Woolies in this town, but it is accessible - and very doable before they fly.

Just found out that one of the girls has been selected to go to a prestigious course in Sydney in the July holidays. She has to fly down and back on her own - petrified!

I'll get the cards organised and going before they all fly.

Now to stat to teach them that they can't take water etc through security!!

Once again, thanks everyone

I'm disappointed that Qantas didn't tell you about the free joining through Everyday Rewards. I know they are missing out on the joining fee but getting the loyalty of keen new travellers would seem to me to be better for them in the longrun.

Not applicable unless you are travelling overseas or going to the USA. Here in Australia on domestic flights you can take water/liquids etc. Naturally they need to be reasonable amounts but otherwise no issues.

Probably be a good idea to get both sets of cards organised nicely ahead of time so as to avoid last minute hassles....

Once you have enough cards for everyone, the kids can then register their Woolworths card online: https://www.everydayrewards.com.au/edr/wps/portal/rewards

And can also apply for the QFF card online at the same time!

Cheers, and well done!

Doesn't have to specifically a Woolies to pick them up - if there's a BWS, Woolies brand petrol station or some other of the Woolies brand outlets you can also get the cards there. :)

Have a look at the everydayrewards.com.au site.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Nothing like them out here - only IGA/Coles/Foodworks, Caltex/Bogas or the local pubs. I'll drive into Dubbo on the weekend and collect the cards, then they can register and use sometime before they fly.

It's a real pleasure to see these kids mature and develop. All 5 want to go to Uni, all 5 will get there and I'm guessing that all 5 will graduate. So good to see outback kids achieve without having to go to private schools. If only the pollies / bureaucrats would have the same outlook <sigh>.

Teachers rock!
Will now get off my soap box. :D

In terms of FF points they will earn "only" 1000 points each way roughly. So only 2,000 points in total. Now if they were related they could transfer the points to each other and someone could end up with 10,000 points...

My 16 m/o has 4900 points in his account and will be discussing shortly if he wishes to transfer them to me...

If you are going to Dubbo anyway no big deal, otherwise send me a PM and I will pop 5 in the mail to save you the trip ;).

Beat me to it.

I'm also the product of non-private school education in a regional centre (cairns). My school produced a large number of uni graduates and outperformed the big more establish schools in the area. All because of some very dedicated and wonderful teachers.
Thanks!

Everyday rewards the way to go but don't forget new QFF rule starting today I think where there must be activity on an account every 6 months or they will penalise you by deducting points from memory. Don't remember the exact details but from memory as long as you earn a point every 6 months you are AOK. I'm sure someone else will have the details.

It is 18 months.

Not quite right. Points will have an 18 month expiry instead of 3 years if there is no point activity.

Thanks everyone for your help. I picked up the cards on Tuesday (had to do some heavy explaining as to why I needed 10 - 2 classes). Grabbed the kids on Thursday and said (in my best school marm voice): Quick, do this!

They all registered, then linked up their flights to their QFF number. The girl who is going down early alsoregistered her flight, and was able to view both flights.

Thanks to those people who offered to mail the cards out to me. The offer was much appreciated, but as I knew I was going in, didn't take you up on it.

Thanks once again AFF'rs.

Once again, a big "thank you" to those who pointed me to using the Woolies cards for the kids to join QFF free.:D

At the beginning of Sept, we flew Dubbo / Sydney return. One girl looked for a parachute on the way down, but almost fell asleep on the way back.

2nd day down, I took them through security at Sydney Airport so they could get used to it (just a little different to Dubbo!) When we did return, they faced domestic security like old hands.

One boy flying out very shortly to Fiji and we had a look at the International Terminal so he knew where to go.

They all had a wow of a time and are busy planning their next trip. I think that Countrylink trains has just lost 5 travellers.

I can't post a photo due to DET security, but once more many thanks for the info.

Sounds like you had a lot of fun, maybe next year QF can throw in a tour of the airport or CASA will take you through ATC, it never hurts to ask and the seeds sown in such experiences can have a big effect on the choices kids made later on! Thanks for letting us know how things went!
