There is award availability on both for the day I want. THey also leave Tokyo around the same time (JL at 1950, QF at 2030). Which should I choose? Will be part of a 280k oneworld award so I don't think there should be a difference in taxes.

This review tempts me to try JL: http://www.smh.com.au/travel/flight-test-japan-airlines-business-class-20130314-2g2jl.html

I figure I've tried Skybed II enough! Or is there a chance I will get an old 744 and as WP be able to select an old F seat?

Personally I like trying something new. So that would be JL for me. However I believe the seat is not horizontal. Which is often a tipping point for many.

I loved JL J seats on the 777. Great food, great service, seat was fine (slept well)!

If you have a choice between a full flat bed and an angled bed, go for the full flat! :)

If there's a chance you're going to get an old 747 with Mk1 skybeds, go for JAL.

What is the odds of getting the Mark I beds on QF on this route nowadays ?

I have been lucky so far with the Mark II on the last two occasions.

********

Looking forward to Oct 2015, JL still uses 777-200 and not the promised 777-300ER (or the 787). Does the 777-200 have the angled bed (yes, I know it's a daytime flight - I'm thinking of JL772 vs QF21) ?

*****

This is what I could see:

QF: better IFE, 50/50 chance of Mark II (just guessing here), night time flight (start the day in Tokyo early, Tsukiji still open for breakfast, easy transfer to Kyoto etc...)

JL: better (Asian) menu, less Western IFE content, perhaps more attentive soft product, daytime flight (5pm arrival for JL772), ? angled bed (but perhaps not relevant to a daytime flight)

Have I missed anything else ?

What would be your preference ?

Which one would have a higher chance of a lie-flat bed in Oct 2015 ?

I believe the JL 77W is only in the schedule until 28 March. After that it may revert to a 772, or they may decide to continue the service.

If you can get a confirmed flat bed on QF for the dates you are looking to fly, that would be the way to go.

Flat bed for a day flight? Absolutely! Unless of course you're just planning to get to Tokyo tired and hit the sack. Sleep on the plane the whole way to Tokyo and you can hit the ground running for a great night out eating, drinking and sightseeing!

Earlier this year I pre-selected seats on QF21 SYD-NRT next Jan which was clearly Skybed 1. Then mid-year, I noticed the layout had changed to what was Skybed 2 and quickly snaffled-up the best seats on that config. Imagine my dissapointment on re-checking the allocation about a month ago and seeing no seat allocation. The plane had changed back to Skybed 1 again and they simply deleted my seat choice. Who knows whats next, but I'll lower my expectations to Skybed 0.5 and just be hopeful.

That is precisely my fear.

I know I have been lucky but going forward it is more like "pot luck" than anything.

But with the 777-200, you are looking at a guaranteed angled seat so Mark 0.5 is a little better than that !

If it is going to be 777-300ER, then it will be JL for sure. Would you agree ?

I flew JL 771/772 in the last fortnight. I find the JAL seat lacking in padding for sleep. When I landed in Syd I found myself wishing I had taken QF22 as we landed immediately behind it.

We prefer JL SYD-NRT but I agree the seat at the moment means we don't fly JL NRT-SYD.
Come next month with the new sky suite on JL things may change.

I think the roll out starts next month but may take some time to complete. They are also redoing the 787s which will rollout to the Frankfurt flights first.

From next month, SS7 is added to JL771/772 (NRT-SYD) and JL1/2 (HND-SFO), SS8 starts service with limited flights to FRA and to HND-JFK JL3/4 in January.
I had SS6 on my SIN-HND flight last week. It was the best sleep I've had on a ~6 hour flight for a long time (got more rest then in QF A380 F on QF1 DXB-LHR the week before).

I will eventually do a TR from my JL/AA flights to LOTFAP via NRT. But in the meantime I will say that the new Sky Suite on JL 787/777 will be a very compelling proposition, particularly if you can continue to get them at a substantial (~25%) discount to the top-tier competitor prices for the same route.

Yes was referring to the SS8's

Better sleep?? It's a narrower seat that the QF F offering. Sleep is so personal

Would that 'stick' on the NRT SYD route or will it be changed ?

Best guess please

I'd go for something new, JL looks like soft product and service would be superior to QF so if you can get the new sky suite give it a whirl :)

As far as anyone knows, NRT-SYD will have SS7 until at least end March. (JL schedule not locked in past that)
