I got an email from Jetstar today stating,
"You’re one of a lucky few eligible to upgrade to Business Class for one of
your upcoming flights on your trip to Bangkok
."

The offer was an upgrade to Business for $210 each. I'm not sure what made us eligible - possibly that I'd already paid for extra leg room seats, or possibly being a Club Jetstar member.

When I got to the site, I found the next option beyond the basic, namely $260 each which includes 7800 Qantas points and lounge pass. Which certainly is a good deal for the additional $50 each. So I booked the latter deal (though that took some effort, as I had to clear the cache, close the browser and reopen it before the booking would be processed).

Only problem was that while we now had 30 kg bag limits on the way to Bangkok, we still only had 20kg limits for the Economy return trip. So I decided to spend another $47.50 for my suitcase to go to 30kg on the return trip, to carry home my wife's souvenirs. (Actually, I was wondering why I hadn't bought the higher weight limit for me on the return trip last time we flew Jetstar last year).

The only possible downside was that if I hadn't been quick, I may have wound up with my two Business seats, but not have been able to sit next to my wife (one of the five remaining seats was taken as I was selecting). This would have been problematic.

Anyhow, after the successful booking it all seemed like a very good offer to me, given the $789 per person, had I been booking Business without the offer today.

Can I take it these select Upgrade offers are fairly common? (Even though I hadn't heard about them before).

Any definitive ideas on how they choose who to make the upgrade offer to?

Cheers,
Renato

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

A search might have found other threads.

Seems to be based on loads.
Most have paid for some form of upgrade in the past.

Is your flight in around two weeks? Jetstar often seems to send out these emails around 2 weeks before the flight if the J cabin loads are light.

I've never received the offer as a solo passenger but have received it twice when part of a booking for 3.

I didn't take up the offer the last time and noticed that the business cabin did not sell out while the offer was available.

Looked to me like they only send the offer out to the same number of people to match what business seats are available.

Dead right there - exactly two weeks before the flight.

Very interesting thanks.
Though in our case, there was definitely a solo person who took the seat next to our two.
Or maybe it was a member of a couple who got the offer - but trying to escape the other member?

Interesting thanks. The price for upgrades seem to have dropped from two years ago.

It could also be that the prices vary from flight to flight (even on the same route). Fewer seats sold in J = lower asking price.

Makes sense.
It would be good though if more people posted recent paid upgrade offers to different locations.

Does Jetstar still offer email upgrades? I have been offered them previously flying to Japan but nothing this time. I fly out in a week. Checking their site they still have plenty of business seats.

I got offer for Syd-Hcm for the 2 of us in July..$234 each to upgrade to J.....jumped on the offer. ;) ...had only paid $240 each for the Y seats.

Do you recall how far out they offered this?

I got the offer yesterday, Narita to Gold Coast X 4 passengers! We originally booked this flight as the return for free, so only paid $329 per person, plus seat selection so we could sit next to the kids. We also joined jetstar club in this booking as well.

We got the offer 16 days out. $239 per person for business upgrade, or $329 with points and SC. we choose the points and SC, as it was 120SC and 7600 points.

There were about 10 seats free in business, and when we booked this, it automatically booked us in row 1 (yes!) with the 3 middle on one aisle seat on the side. So we are sitting together. Best part is that it is the overnight flight, so saying yes to the upgrade was a no brainer for us.

The SC will get me Gold earlier by a month (i had enough points to go gold in jan)

NRT to OOL is the one I'm after too. I despise this flight home so am keen to get the upgrade. I'll keep an eye on my email.

We are also travelling with return for free tickets .

Might be worth noting for future travel... if you have young children you will be sat next to them for free (it's a safety thing). But they can split up an adult+child combo (so you could have two sets of adjacent seats rather than all four together).

Will be keeping an eye out as we're doing HNL-MEL next year with the kidlet.

Didn't receive any offer this time. At the 14 day mark for return flight and nothing.
