Hi,
First of all, apologies if this question has been posted previously. Today I booked flights to Honolulu on the Qantas website (ex Sydney) in July, QF3 to Honolulu and JQ4 to Sydney as there was no Qantas service available on that day.
In regards to baggage, my Qantas itinerary states 2x pieces for the Jetstar flight. I contacted Qantas and was told I was allowed 2x 20kg per passenger. When I contacted Jetstar via live chat I was told I was allowed 20kg only per passenger. How can I obtain the correct information? Am I allowed any extra baggage on a Jetstar flight if I am Qantas Platinum FF?

Also, as I have never flown Jetstar before, can someone please tell me what, if any, inflight entertainment is available? Do I have to pre-purchase meals?

Thank you in advance.

The itinerary is just referring to QF flights ie QF3/QF4.

What's important is what the allowance is on the electronic ticket.

I would call the QF Premium Desk & ask them to look at your eticket & tell you what the baggage allowance says for JQ4 HNL/SYD as that is what will apply when you checkin at HNL Airport.

My guess is SYD/HNL you would be allowed 3 pieces as you're a QF Plat freq flyer travelling on QF metal but inbound only 20 kilos as JQ don't offer any extra allowance for Plats.

The QF codeshare on JQ4 is on QF284 - so I assume the OP is booked on JQ3 rather than the codeshare.

Being travel to/from/within the USA, the DOT exception to IATA resolution 302 applies.

This means the (basic) allowance on the first "journey" (QF3) applies to the entire itinerary (JQ4). (Note The 3 x 32Kg for Platinum should apply on the return, but won't due mainly to "computer says no").

Here's the basic QF3 allowance:
[h=3]Baggage allowances may vary across airlines[/h] Under US Department of Transport regulations, if your travel to, from or within the USA involves one or more airlines with flights that do not have a "QF" flight number, the airline whose flight number appears first on your ticket will determine whether its baggage rules or another airline's baggage rules will apply to all the flights in your itinerary. For travel between Australia and the USA, usually (but not always) Qantas' baggage rules will apply.
More importantly, what shows on your e-ticket (the one showing an 081- ticket number; not the itinerary) is what the computer says.

I suggest you revisit you web chat and point out IATA 302, the USA DOT exception (and note that it is a single booking).

IF you are on QF284 (the JQ4 codeshare) then this applies: Qantas Industry Sales Site - Policies and Procedures - Booking on QF/ JQ Codeshare Flights

If booked on JQ3 then check this: International | Jetstar Economy | Jetstar

Qantas is considered the most significant carrier (MSC) on your itinerary in terms of IATA resolution 302 on baggage. As a result, my take is you'll have two pieces at 23kgs on the JQ flight HNL-SYD. This is because the MSC's entry/base allowance is two pieces at 23kgs. (Obviously on your outbound you'll have your status benefits which will bump your allowance up to a massive four pieces at 32kgs each.) I would also argue this is the case regardless of whether you're on JQ4 or QF284 as Qantas is the MSC in either case.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if you encounter difficulties at HNL with the JQ staff. I'd be prepared.

As for your other questions, it's been quite some time since I've flown JQ4 but I believe you'll have to purchase meals when booked on JQ4 (as opposed to QF284) and entertainment units are also available for hire. Best to bring your own.

Please report back with the end result.

I was just on JQ4 and yes, everything needs to be purchased. The Ipad minis have movies and TV programs on them. After a while, I was hooking it in over the velcro seam on the rear of the seat in front. The movies and TV programs are quite good.

I guess the only way to pre-pay the extras at the time of booking is to book on the JQ website itself where you have the option of adding baggage, plus bundles etc. I can't see any QF codeshare flight numbers eg QF283/284 (?) operated by Jetstar any more on HNL services.

Checked Baggage AllowanceFree Baggage allowance included in your fare applies to Adults and Children. Visit checked baggage for details.
Additional checked baggage allowances are available for Platinum, Gold, and Silver Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club members on Qantas operated services.

I just did a dummy booking on the QF website selecting a 'Saver' fare outbound on QF3 on 18 July a 'Starter' fare inbound on JQ4 on 31 July. It does display the baggage allowances of 2 pieces next to both of the flights during the booking process.

I'd just make sure that the 2 pieces is reflected on the eticket for the return sector to match up with what it says when making the booking as above.

So while it appears the US DOT rule applies ie getting 2 pieces each way, you would not get the extra Plat allowance of a 3rd piece HNL/SYD because JQ4 is not a QF operated flight. It would've been quite confusing if someone was booked on QF284 as a lot of pax would think that if their flight had a "QF" flight number it would mean 'QF operated' whereas in actual fact it's 'QF marketed' but JQ operated.

Despite the flight actually saying 'JQ4 operated by Jetstar' there will still be people who assume they're travelling on QF because "I booked it on the Qantas website" or "but it's a Qantas itinerary".
