Jetstar prepares for reopening of Avalon


There will be twice daily flights between the local airport and Sydney from December 18.

NSW is opening up its southern border to Victoria from November 23, due to the low number of coronavirus cases.

It will be the first time the budget airline has operated between the two destinations since March 31.


The budget airline is hoping to add more flights as state borders come down.

CEO Gareth Evans said they were hoping to reconnect family and friends.

"We've seen huge demand for flights between Victoria and NSW since last week's announcement, so we expect travellers will be quick to take advantage of our low fares out of Avalon," he said.

“As well as providing a direct link to Sydney, the resumption of services will help boost tourism back into Victoria, with Avalon being the gateway to the state’s famous Great Ocean Road."

Is a direct turn with HLO possible in AVV?

I'm looking at either a (a) 6.40pm arrival or (b) 7.45pm arrival, with a departure back to SYD at 8.25pm. Even option (a) can't be booked as one ticket.

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. Jetstar requires a large time between flights because even on domestic connections they don't transfer baggage.

Provided it's the exact same aircraft there won't be any delay issues, you'll have to book it as two separate tickets and just complete mobile/online check-in.

Some Jetstar destinations like Ayers Rock, Ballina and Hamilton Island you end up landside in the baggage claim area however I don't believe Avalon is like this and even if it was it won't take long to reclear security. Just to be sure I'd select a seat near the front if possible.

Be careful with Avalon they have been cancelling a lot of the evening flights and combining them as they have a couple flights within an hour of each other nightly now. Also the same in the morning they have kept some flights closer together and cancel and combine often. They have changed up the Avalon schedule since COVID.

Make sure it’s the same aircraft.

You enter the terminal now at the departure area where you board. Many years ago they used to funnel you down to the baggage shed.

Is the longer question wise? If they use the same plane, the shorter connection would make more sense. I'd go the 6:40pm arrival and turn around to whatever flight that plane goes back as. I guess there's an hour leeway for SYD curfew on the 8:25pm flight, but there's always a risk you might be stuck in Lara or Geelong for the night.

Looking at 15 May, the 6.40pm arrival doesn't appear to have an opposite sector back to SYD. The next departure after that flight's arrival is 8.25pm, which I assume is the return of the 7.40pm arrival. Or is it? Perhaps that 7.45m arrival spends the night in AVV which would mean the 6.40pm arrival would be a better option.

The 1 Avalon based aircraft normally does another Sydney return after that 640pm arrival however on a Saturday they don’t (Sat night normaly dead Mel to Syd).

You should be ok as they probably won’t cancel and combine flights as they run a shorter schedule on a Saturday anyway.

The 640pm arrival is the Avalon based A320. You will head back on the 825pm which is a Sydney based crew.

My membership year doesn't end until much later in the calendar year. I don't need any to requalify for this year but I'm keen to get as much of a head start on next year as possible. These AVV runs seemed very good value and relatively painless.

Edit: Just checked the T&Cs again and it's only the Status Extension section where JQ is not eligible. No such restriction in the Status Credit Rollover section. I am comfortable again that my JQ SCs will roll over.

Thanks for that. My interpretation of that is that a JQ domestic flight does not trigger eligibility for rollover but once you do trigger eligibility by flying QF then all SCs will roll over, including JQ SCs but excluding gifts & bonuses. I'll have to wait a couple more months to see if it works or not.
