Jetstar recalls Ansett's air force

The fall of Ansett saw Australian pilots spread throughout the world but an overseas advertising campaign by Jetstar International has underscored the extent of the diaspora.

Advertisements lodged by the start-up in an international aviation magazine - as well as in newspapers in Australia, Dubai, Bahrain and Singapore - had produced 730 responses by Monday, 81 per cent of them from Australian citizens or residents.

"I think that after Ansett, there are a lot of Australians working around the world," Jetstar chief executive Alan Joyce. "And there are lot of very well-experienced and qualified pilots that work for Emirates, Singapore Airlines and other carriers in the region who would like to come back to Australia."

The new airline's move to advertise overseas alarmed the Australian and International Pilots Association, which wrote to transport Minister Warren Truss expressing its concern and calling on him to intervene.

...<snip>...

Four A330 aircraft will transfer from Qantas to form the bulk of Jetstar International's start-up fleet and two more will be delivered new from Airbus. They will be replaced from 2008 by Boeing 787-8s, which will give way to 787-9s capable of flying to Europe and the US.

...<snip>...

Jetstar is upgrading its air operator's certificate to allow it to fly the A330s and to get extended twin-engine operations approval. The A330s are expected to move over to Qantas in October so they can be repainted. The interior seating configuration will remain the same but with leather seats and new fittings in Jetstar colours.

The airline remains confident it will start flying by November.

While many of us are concerned about the impact of JQ, I guess it is a good opportunity for ex-AN pilots to come home.

Regarding the last few paragraphs of this story, does anyone know which QF routes will lose the A330's that will be moved over to JQ?

knowing Jetstar's agenda to be an extremely low cost carrier I wonder if the salary and conditions are going to equal or surpass those being offered by the many carriers that these former Ansett pilots are now working for.

All the QF domestic routes currently operated by A330-200 aircraft. Its only the -200s that are going to JQ, and as they will all be going, that measn no more A330-200 QF domestic services. The A330-300's will remain with mainline.

So I guess that means SYD-MEL, SYD-PER, MEL-PER, BNE-PER, SYD-CNS and possibly others.

So what will they use on those services in lieu, e.g. SYD & MEL-PER? The ex AO 767's?

QF has extended the leases on the BA 767s to cover the changes.

I believe there are some more 738's due before October. And of course some of the slack will be picked up by JQ's domestic A320s.

The AO 767's will be required to continue the services that are currently AO routes under the QF mainline colours.

743s will be operating SYD-PER-SYD services for the foreseeable future. Remember QF will also take delivery of 5 more 73Hs over the next year or two.

Note that you'll find that the 5 ex-AO 763s will be flat out covering AO's old routes, although don't be surprised if a few of the 763s operate the odd domestic sector.

Thanks for the info, guys. I like the A330's on the SYD-PER-SYD route. They're quieter and the Y seats are comfortable and in a good configuration. I've resolved to avoid flying 737's to PER if I can. :)

I guess a 747 would be better than a 737 but the seat config in Y won't be as pleasant as an A330.

Follow up story. The QF pilots are not happy.

Pilots pan Qantas global hire plan
May 4, 2006 - 4:21PM

Pilots have criticised a move by Qantas to begin advertising Jetstar positions internationally, warning it is another attempt to send the company's core functions offshore.

Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA) vice president Jeff Lunt today said advertisements had appeared on the international industry website Flight Global.

The ads invite expressions of interest for pilots to work for Qantas subsidiary Jetstar on long-haul international routes and domestic short-haul routes within Australia, he said.

They need something bigger than the 767's on SYD-PER, or they will need to add an additional flight (hint to QF: something leaving PER about 2p.m. would be cool)

Pilot ire as outsiders apply for Jetstar jobs

Here is a follow up story on JQ's crew recruitment.

Pilot ire as outsiders apply for Jetstar jobs
Scott Rochfort
June 20, 2006

JETSTAR has further enraged long-haul pilots working for its full-service parent, Qantas, after announcing it had received 1000 "job applications" from pilots based in Asia and the Middle East keen to fly its long-haul services.

After holding "roadshow" job presentations in Asia and the Middle East, Jetstar chief executive Alan Joyce said many of the applicants were "experienced on [Airbus] 330s and 320s and working for major airlines around the world".

Just five months away from the low-cost airline's first long-haul flight, Mr Joyce said many of the expressions of interest were from pilots working for overseas carriers such as Emirates and Singapore Airlines, many of them expatriate Australians.

But with Jetstar already bypassing Qantas pilots to crew its long-haul planes, other unions are growing edgy over whether the airline plans to bypass their members as well.

The unions have missed the point of a LCC starting operstions. Jetstar's intention is to lower costs so they will be looking for people who are prepared to work for 25-40% less than currently paid QF staff. Can't survive providing lower airfares than QF and still pay staff the same wages!

Interesting to read they are seeking codeshare arrangements with other Asian carriers. Is it really necessary if the intention is to keep fares low? Price fixing would be a very good reason to seek codeshare arrangements.
