Jetstar passengers stranded in Vietnam

Scott Rochfort
June 20, 2007 - 1:12PM

Jetstar International's reputation has taken another battering, with 213 passengers being left stranded in Ho Chi Minh City today due to a problem with one of the airline's jets.
After boarding a Jetstar plane two hours after it was scheduled to leave last night, passengers were asked to disembark 90 minutes later due to an undisclosed technical problem.
"We had to disembark the aircraft and we had to accommodate the 213 passengers if they required hotel rooms," said Jetstar spokesman Simon Westaway.
Mr Westaway declined to disclose what the technical problem was, only to say the A330-200 jet had to fly back to Australia without passengers and baggage for urgent repairs.
"Qantas engineering will work on the aircraft and get to the bottom of the issue," Mr Westaway said.
After first considering putting the stranded passengers on Vietnam Airlines flights, Jetstar is now preparing to send a relief A330-200 jet to Vietnam this afternoon to pick up the stranded passengers. The flight is due to depart at 9.15pm Ho Chi Minh City time, around 20 hours after the original flight was due to leave.
"We think we handled the issue quite professionally. People who were disembarked were put in hotels," said Mr Westaway.
It is two months after Jetstar was seriously embarrassed when it left passengers stranded in Honolulu for two days, thanks to mechanical problems with two of its four A330s.
Mr Westaway said the stranded passengers had been given lunch coupons, phone cards and a $200 Jetstar gift voucher.
"This will mean about a day's delay in returning but we're meeting all people's costs in terms of hotel costs and travel arrangements," he said.
However, some passengers appear confused. One reader said that her mother - who was due to arrive in Sydney at 9.30 this morning - was still waiting by the phone in her hotel room for an update from Jetstar.
The delay will have knock-on effects on other Jetstar services. Due to Jetstar having to fly one of its four A330s to Ho Chi Minh City to pick up the stranded passengers, Mr Westaway said a flight due to leave from Sydney to coughet at 2pm today will be several hours late.

If they required hotel rooms!

Did someone remain on the aircraft?

I'm surprised they have enough aircraft (4?) to fly one home, fly another back and only cause a couple of hours of delays to schedules.

Maybe there were people living in HCM using the flight, who could go home. I don't think Jet* has a white Australia policy.

Yawn.

Where was the media when my partners mother got stranded by Emirates in Singapore for 10 hours then in Dubai for another 10 to arrive in London 20 hours late?

What about the colleague of mine who get stranded in Moree on Easter Thursday and stuck there for 12 hours when his QF link flight went US.

My goodness one could fill an entire newspaper with these sort of stories. I guess though, if you market your product to the masses like JQ does, then you have to put up with tabloid style stories like this.

Well that just wouldnt be newsworthy - JQ is bad, terrible and ruining the proud icon that is QF and should be lambasted at all times.

It's alright when JQ are pushing ad revenue into the press' pigy bank but the res of teh time - it's bad bad bad!

That is not what I meant. Also I think people in HCM are smart enough to know which carrier to fly. I can not imagine too many, if any, TAs in HCM recommending JQ to anyone.

There is a contrast between his first and second statement on the matter and I am guessing the 2 statements were announced close to each other. The second statement says that "People who disembarked were put in hotels". Which to me implies anyone who disembarked was put up in a hotel.

I expect that most people flying JQ are not using a TA but are booking themselves on-line and are making their carrier decisions based on price as their main criteria.

Given QAN’s investment in Pacific Airlines http://www.pacificairlines.com.vn/Search.aspx?Culture=en-us & http://www.qantas.com.au/regions/dyn/au/publicaffairs/details?ArticleID=2007/apr07/3568, and the likelihood of it being re-branded as a Jetstar franchise, I am sure QAN executives hope you are wrong. (What NM said notwithstanding.)

Jetstar would appear to have far fetching ambitions from Vietnam – “Jetstar is well on the way to developing itself into the first low-cost airline servicing the world.” according to http://www.vneconomy.com.vn/eng/?param=article&catid=01&id=6dcd4f48e0bea1

Perhaps today's focus on JQi’s Vietnam issues, has been driven by someone other than pissed off passengers?!

I am still trying to work out why the A330 JQ fleet has two colour schemes, one grey based and one white based, then again maybe I have too much too think about! Maybe they should have a lemon based colour scheme

In HCM? I would expect most would be using a TA and the ones who are smart enough to use the internet would not be booking JQ.

JQ is only ever cheap when a sale is on. Usually they charge more than a full service carrier but only provide the service expected from a LCC.

Totally agree. But there are some people I know who does fly international using Jetstar, and pay normal Jetstar fares, just because they automatically think they are cheaper than others. Of course they have to buy "feed me" and "comfort me" packs.

I cannot wait for AirAsiaX, Tiger and Viva Macau to come aboard.

I booked myself a launch fare SYD to KUL on JQi, $277 all up including the "Feed Me" pack. Definitely looking forward to increased international competition, and hopefully a comparable fare for the return leg.

The KUL-PEN connection only cost me A$15 all up on AK (Air Asia). Long live the LCC's (but not the LCCT's :p).

Interstingly was just looking at one of the most competitive Asian LCC routes (SIN-BKK) where you have Jetstar (3K), Air Asia (FD), Tiger (TR).

Interestingly pricing typically is TR < 3K << FD (FD much more expensive)

So 3K close to TR on most routes but has leather seats, 20kg baggage allowance vs 15kg, and departs from T1 vs Budget terminal.

Was not expecting this given FD's rep
