Back at September I was able to fly SYD <=> Osaka with J* for $550,
ultra cheap, and I was able to get myself and gf exit row seats as well !
[I was charming] , so I can see clearly what's happening in the toilet section.

J* crew was mostly Thai, and during the long flight I have noticed that they lock off all but one toilets on the middle section of the Airbus A3?0. I notice because I saw those poor passengers always queue up on the one [ultra disgusting smelly] toilet and no one come out from those locked toilets. [Note. locked toilets looks like they are occupied]

Of course when I need to go to the toilets, I unlock the doors myself and use it, of course I did not lock it back when I finish. J* crew looks suspicious near the end when they realised that the toilets are not locked.....;)

That's what I can expect from their "international crew", thank god they don't cook my food otherwise I wonder about hygiene standards.

Also, are anyone stupid enough to book the same route via QF and JAL ?
you are getting the same flight/food/service but paying much much more !!

Though presumably ALL the toilets aboard JL and QF remain unlocked for the duration of the flight.;)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Sorry but i'd have to disagree with you there.

The only reason there will be because of lack of choice
and FF pts...

And baggage allowances, lounge access for non-QFF status pax, express check in and immigration and a few other things.

That, and also legacy carriers usually have other aircraft they can call into service at short notice if a plane goes u/s. They have even been known to book their pax onto other carriers as an act of good faith. Their pax aren't required to wait for until a part arrives from Toulouse, or until the airline feels like sending another aircraft to pick them up.

For me, at least, there is a lot more to consider than the price of the ticket when I choose a carrier. If you're driven soley by price, then good luck to you - but if something goes pear-shaped and OneStar leaves you marooned airside at a foreign airport whilst they decide whether or not you're all important enough to rescue, if and when there's a spare A330 to do an additional run to where-ever, just remember that you paid your money, and made your choice!

Hmm, I had assumed that this was a reference to the QF/JL services being a codeshare on the JQ flight.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Yes, I was refering to people booking a QF and JAL tiks
and end up in the same JQ flight....

I think in terms of lounge access, if you are a QF club member you can
use the Qantas lounge even if you buy a JQ flight..

So the net difference is the ff pts...
but I think for that flight if you book QF business class it will be just
the same as starclass but cost is still much higher ...

I don't know anyone who would pay for a Qantas Business Tkt knowing it was on JQ, but to compare Starclass to QF Business on QF Metal is ridiculous....its like comparing China Airlines to Singapore Airlines, there is no comparison.

The times they are a'changing.

I frequently fly MEL<->SIN on SQ in biz & first on the overnight flights & the seats are lousy ...very little recline & the planes aren't very new. Cabin service & food very good.

Contrast this to biz class on China Eastern SHA-PEK in which the planes are brand new and seats recline very well and are fine for sleeping. Cabin service very attentive, but food poor.

I'd much rather be in the China Eastern plane than the SQ for comfort.

MEL-SIN on the overnight flight - I presume you're referring to SQ218 (dep 0050). The times are changing indeed for that flight is now operated by the spanking new 77W which has SQ's newest products but for the R suites.

SIN-MEL overnight - avoid SQ237 and you'd be right. The other flight is a 744 with Spacebeds and Skysuites.

.... and I'd rather be on SQ for probability of arriving at destination :!:

and I don't even like SQ.

Is that a jab at safety? From memory China Eastern have only had 1 hull loss back in the late 80's, and no major incidents since 1993. SQ can't say the same...

This has got me wondering, because I have never even thought about it. How do you unlock the toilets from the outside? I always thought the crew would use one of those special 'square' keys to lock/unlock the toilets from the outside. :D

You can do it with a biro, easily done (you watch them do it when you board the plane and try and use the loo immediately, claiming "too much coffee in the QP").

Two types of latches:
  1. Older style where one can see the notch in the Occupied/Vacant slider:
    • simply get a pen or other pointy object (I've seen finget nails used) and push it right or left until it unlatches
  2. Newer Style where there's a metal plate above the latch:
    • slip your fingernail underneath it at the bottom and lift toward you and up. The plate should swing out and up to reveal a sliding latch.

26 October 1993; China Eastern MD82; Fuzhou, China - Overun on landing, 2 lives lost.
6 April 1993; China Eastern Airlines MD11; near Aleutian Islands, 2 lives lost during accidental slat deployment.
21 Nov 2004; China Eastern CRJ200, Inner Mongolia, Control Loss, 53 Lives lost just after takeoff

Interestingly SQ just took a 25% stake in China Eastern:shock:

danielribo,

Not a jab at all. A comment on my thoughts about their safety and safety record. Two quite distinct things.
