Cancelling today’s JQ8 makes me wonder if a spare crew were ever dispatched to SIN to recover yesterdays delayed flight, or if they’re doing funny business with crew positioning to manage short staffing in the 787 crew.

Today's JQ8 is cancelled as the inbound aircraft will instead operate yesterday's delayed JQ8 (now re-numbered JQ1008). It is re-scheduled to depart at 8pm tonight.

One of the more hilarious posts this month on AFF, but unfortunately for travellers it has the ring of truth.

Quickly thinking of another international flight 'set' (i.e. return) that's cancelled as often as 'the 7' and 'the 8' is impossible.

Thankfully I don't fly JQi and rarely QFi, but one has to feel empathy for those who use (or, more correctly, attempt to use) these MEL-SIN-MEL flights. As you suggest, an EU261-type scheme is much needed but sadly Catherine King doesn't agree. She must love the CL!

@dajop , historically in December there's far more departing Australia than arriving. This should explain what you've observed.

Christmas Day 2025's JQ31, the early morning 0700 hours MEL-DPS (A321 VH-OFL) did not take off until 0840, so arrival should be approximately 1123 hours, 83 minutes late. It had arrived ex DPS in MEL at 0459, only four minutes late as JQ34.

JQ29, the 25 December scheduled 1420 hours mid afternoon MEL-BKK is estimated to depart 305 minutes late at 1925 this evening. This may be due to B788 VH-VKB operating JQ8983 from SIN down to MEL, a planned 0730 hours departure from Changi with estimated arrival in MEL at the odd time of 1742 (at gate) this late afternoon. Is this an empty positioning flight?

VH-VKL is on the overnight ICN down to SYD JQ48, the 2150 hours 24 December that took off at 2318 with arrival on 25 December estimated as 1058 hours, 53 late. This aircraft is then to operate JQ13, the 1210 hours lunchtime SYD-KIX in Japan that optimistically is displaying as departing only 10 minutes late at 1220 hours. Unlikely.

Hoping not to offend anyone or upset their travel plans but be good if JQ 945 is on time today then JQ946 gets cancelled - Pilot Nephew is in charge, we might just get to see him, otherwise if you see crazy loops over 3145.......

In more on Christmas Day 2025, JQ125, the early morning 0625 hours ADL up to DPS took off at 0817 with arrival for A321 VH-OFQ estimated as 1034 hours, 89 minutes behind schedule.

VH-VKL is on the overnight ICN down to SYD JQ48, the 2150 hours 24 December that took off at 2318 with arrival on 25 December estimated as 1058 hours, 53 late. This aircraft is then to operate JQ13, the 1210 hours lunchtime SYD-KIX in Japan that optimistically is displaying as departing only 10 minutes late at 1220 hours. Unlikely.

As surmised, JQ13 on Christmas Day 2025 did not take off until 1353 hours. Arrival in KIX looks to be about 2101 hours, 76 late.

JQ25 (Christmas Day 1155 hours CNS-NRT, B788 VH-VKI) was in the sky bang on 1330 hours. so arrival is estimated as 65 minutes late at 1925.

Christmas Day's badly delayed JQ29, the 1420 hours MEL-BKK finally took off at 1942 hours. Arrival for B788 VH-VKB should be about 0034 hours on Friday 26, 304 minutes late. The scheduled 2125 hours BKK-MEL JQ30 is showing as departing at 0205 hours., which means an approximate arrival of 1500 hours mid afternoon in Melbourne tomorrow afternoon.

Going by gate numbers, this 26 December 2025 arrival may form JQ17 to HKT, the 1515 hours. As yet, it's not showing as 'delayed'.

UPDATE: JQ17 should be formed by the above aircraft, as it's displaying as altered to depart 75 late at 1630 hours. This may be a tad optimistic.

In more on 26 December, JQ28 ex HKT arrived in SYD at 1052 hours, 18 minutes early with B788 VH_VKD. This aircraft is next off to KIX on JQ47, the 1140 hours altered to depart nominally at 1250.

This shows how JQi's B788 fleet is under pressure as it's not normal for an 1110 hours scheduled arrival to form an 1140 hours timetabled departure.

One I missed yesterday was JQ65, the 1330 hours BNE-BKK getting the flick. On 26 December, B788 VH-VKH is operating what is probably an empty flight from MEL to BNE (JQ8996) that took off at 1104 for forecast arrival at 1155 AEST in Brisbane. Today's (26) JQ65 is estimated to depart an hour late at 1430 as a consequence.

Christmas Day's JQ25 from CNS to NRT arrived at the major Japanese airport last night at 1941 hours, 81 late with VH_VKI. The return JQ26 from NRT back down to CNS pulled in this morning at 0645 hours, 130 minutes behind schedule. Despite a generous allowed turnaround, its next flight, JQ25 again is expected to depart an hour late at 1255 hours. Is this due to crew requiring sufficient mandated rest?

JQ16 from KIX to CNS was an hour late arriving on Friday 26 at 0700, but its next trip, JQ15 back to KIX is expected to depart only 10 minutes late at 1255 hours.

In more on 26 December, JQ32 from DPS to MEL, the 1130 hours, took off at 1217 with arrival for A321 VH-OFL suggested as 32 late at 2042 hours mid evening. While I don't travel on JQ, this is a nicely timed flight: no need to rise at sparrows, and home in most Melbourne suburbs by around 2300 at the latest even if customs is slow.

On Saturday 27 December, JQ18 from HKT to MEL has B788 VH-VKB with gate arrival forecast for 1202 hours, 117 minutes late.

-VKE on JQ64 from SGN to MEL is a few nautical miles behind with its blocks on time forecast as 1204 hours, 63 behind.

JQ47 has B788 VH-VKL and is the 1140 hours SYD up to ICN not airborne until 1323 hours. Arrival looks to be about 2123 hours, 68 minutes tardy. This unpunctuality is despite its previous flight, JQ14 from KIX to SYD having arrived at 0833 hours, two minutes ahead of schedule.

Continuing with 27 December, JQ98 from SIN down to PER is the 1415 hours airborne exactly an hour later. Arrival for A321 VH-OFY is likely at around 2016 hours, 41 late.

The SYD-HKT JQ27 has B788 VH_VKH with gate arrival forecast for 2129 hours, 84 minutes behind the timetable.

JQ29, the Sunday 28 December 2025 MEL-BKK due out at 1420 hours mid afternoon should push back at about 1830, 250 minutes late. The only JQi aircraft I can see available seems B788 VH-VKG that arrived ex SIN as JQ8 in MEL on Saturday 27 December at 0714, 11 minutes early, but hasn't carried any passengers or freight since. Presumably it requires attention.

JQ9, the 1020 hours midmorning BNE up to NRT with -VKK took off at 1035 on Sunday 28 so a 1904 hours arrival is expected, 49 minutes behind the eight ball.

-VKL arrived ex ICN in SYD this morning at 1109 hours,, 64 late as JQ48 from ICN. It is returning to the South Korean capital (using poetic licence as IIRC Incheon is a separate LGA from Seoul) but instead of pushing back at the scheduled 1140 hours, it was expected to do so at 1301 hours.

The B788 fleet often has multiple examples of significant late running. Are these aircraft being worked unrealistically hard?

Continuing with Sunday 28 December, JQ204 from AKL to SYD (A321 VH-OFP) is arriving at 1718 hours, 173 minutes late as this 1245 hours scheduled flight did not take off until 1618. It is to form JQ37, the 1735 hours late afternoon SYD-DPS estimated to push back at 1835.

Also on Sunday 28 December, the 1420 hours MEL-BKK (JQ29 with B788 VH-VKG) was airborne at 1927 hours, arriving on Monday 29 at 0001 hours, 271 minutes late. The aircraft is now en route to BNE, having taken off at 0152 hours as JQ66 with arrival suggested as 1327 this afternoon, 277 late. It should then form JQ65 back to BKK, the scheduled 1330 hours said to be departing at 1455 mid afternoon.

The NRT down to CNS JQ26 arrived on 29 December at 0540 hours, 65 late with -VKI.

A321 VH-OFP on JQ38, the overnight DPS-SYD arrived at 0815 hours, 45 late. FR24 incorrectly shows that this aircraft is operating JQ434, the 1010 hours MEL-OOL as well as JQ123 that is the 1020 hours from SYD to VLI. I don't know why FR24 believes the aircraft has a dual life from two different cities.

JQ48 from ICN to SYD has sister aircraft -VKL. It should arrive this morning at 1041 hours, 36 behind.

A321 VH_OIR is on JQ76, the 2150 hours BKK_PER airborne at 2340 with 29 December arrival likely 95 minutes late at 1015 hours.
