Jetstar to do a check (good idea before changing policy) then maybe reduce carry-on from 10kg to 7kg and charge if bag is over.

My peeve would be that its the volume, not the weight that causes problems (lack of bin space). Heavier bags can go under the seat in front. Large bags just won't fit.

Interesting that this is coming into play, as I had a survey from QF on Monday, regarding carry-on on QF flights.

It can be a real pain when you change from one carrier who allows 10kg to another that only allows 7kg (or in the case of BA, whatever you can lift without assistance) - I agree with the volume bit. Some of the carry-on bags I saw on Tuesday were the size of small suitcases and took up so much space, only 3 max would fit.

The other gripe I have is those who put their laptops above rather than under their seat, along with their second bag, but next to it, not on top. Can't anyone "stack" the first on top of their 2nd bag, or stand it upright to reduce the area it requires? I remember when I flew in the US on a number of occasions, the PA announcing the smaller bag were to go under the seat to allow people to put their larger ones in the overheads.

Personally, I'd prefer not to have my laptop in the overhead - seeing people sling their huge rollers into them without bothering to check, sends shivers down my spine as I wait to hear an almighty "CRACK" as someones laptop it smashed to smithereens. :O

Flying up MEL > BNE with carry-on luggage only, this weekend on JQ.

I will endeavour to report my findings should the luggage police make an appearance this weekend :)

Bumping this thread with Jnr's experience today. You may well say "suck it up", which is fine. There is a very personal and emotional element to the story, which is probably totally irrelevant, but it was the reason Jnr did what she did.

Being a young person of limited means, Jnr flies LCC's. Today, she flew QF & JQ MEL-xSYD-MCY, booked as a Classic Award with my points 2 days ago. The reason for this short notice flight is because the other half (my ex) has just been diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer. She wanted/needed to be there asap. She asked me this morning if QF will check her bag through to MCY, but I didn't know. She checked in online for both flights and travelled QF this morning without any issues, boarding with her cabin sized bag as hand luggage. Her ticket allows for 23kgs as checked luggage and I do not know the weight of the bag at this time (will find out later). She arrived in Sydney and goes to gate for boarding on the Jetstar flight SYD-MCY, where she is told that her bag is overweight and will have to be checked in (she's never had her bag weighed with Jetstar in all her previous flights, which she has ensured have all been within the weight limit). At this time, we are at the 36 minute mark to ETD, which is 6 minutes until the cutoff time that baggage can be checked in. Further to this, 2 other pax had their baggage designated as overweight and must be checked. However, Jnr was the only one charged the "inconvenience fee" of $50. Jnr asked the JQ agent why she was the only one being charged and was told "the other two were off duty staff members".

I guess my issue is that there may well have been sufficient time for her to check her bag (she had the allowance on the Classic Award ticket), but was not given the opportunity or option to do so, and that there were other pax (staff, who should know better) who were not charged.

As mentioned previously, we are emotional and stressed with the news of the terminal illness which is impacting our family, but I just think the penalty was unfair, particularly when off duty staff members who should know better than anyone what the baggage limits, are let off of any penalties in front of regular pax. A bit like a cop getting pulled up for speeding, but getting no penalty as opposed to a everyday driver who gets the fine and demerit points.

The problem with this IMHO had been a lack of consistency.
The number of times I have seen pax board with what I would regard as "checked" luggage amazes me.
What's more amazing is that I Hardly ever fly Jet*.

Sympathies robd on several fronts. Sometimes I wish I got pulled up like you have recounted, or like the elderly couple who got bumped at LAX etc. As with the ANZ, Westpac, Australia Post and an Insurance company who I may not mention, the airline who does will do so at their significant cost!!

How is this actually being enforced in reality? My carry-on is regulation size, but often weighs 10-12kg due to camera gear and laptop. Are they actually weighing it? Are JQi pax given more leniency? Are certain airports more likely to haul you up than others? I'm very hesitant to book JQ (even if it is the most convenient option) if they're going to force me to gate check my carry-on due to weight. I flat out refuse to check my camera gear or laptop, and will pay for the extra carry-on weight if I have to. Will they allow you to do that?
