So we have been looking forward to a trip to Bali to unwind. Today, at 4.42am I received an email from Jetstar :
“Due to crewing requirements your flight JQ110 28/04/2019 from Perth to Denpasar has been cancelled.”

Flight was meant to depart at 7.25am. I can’t understand how a crewing issue was identified this late..? Next available flight is in 24hrs, no other flights or airlines have availability. So you have to call Jetstar, wait on hold as probably everyone else is calling, and then ask to change your flight. What happened to the good old days when airlines would call you of a flight was cancelled?
Pets are in boarding, airport car parking has been prepaid, prepaid hotel package can’t be changed, and travel insurance won’t kick in as the cancellation was due to a “crewing issue”. Any advice? Thoughts?
Believe me we didn’t want to fly Jetstar but it seems these days our options with half decent airlines on this route are limited.

I’m sorry to hear that. Have you been given an alternative? Unfortunately all airlines do this but then usually offer an alternative. My nephew got the text from Emirates last week for a flight to Oz from Paris that there was a delay. Oh well. Then he looked at the flight they’d booked him on and it wasn’t a delay but they’d cancelled his flight and rebooked him on one two days later! Ah, nope.

Thanks- they offered a flight in 24hrs which I took.

Hopefully taking the flight 24 hours later will allow you to use most of the things you have booked/pre-paid. If you haven't done so already suggest you contact the hotel and let them know you will be arriving a day later as they may cancel your booking as a no show.

Oh jeeez I was sorry to hear this. I am booked on the same flight later in the week.
Jetstar have other daily flights did they say they were they all full ?
Google search has this cancelled but flight aware has it in mid flight. What's going on.
Keen to hear the outcome of this

They could be repositioning the plane. I doubt the crew are PER based.
IME when dealing with JQ cancellations, online chat has been useful.

Presumably going up to Bali empty (due crewing). The return flight seems to still be running.

Crewing issue could be a sick cabin crew or pilot and maybe they could not find a replacement in time. And yes could happen at any time all the way to take off and even on landing at the other end.

You are on a LCC - they don’t provide the “good old days” service.:D

JQ has form on cancelling flights at the last minute.

Not much you can do in reality
Travel insurance will cover you even for crewing issues as that is an airline issue. Who told you it does not?

Remember that JQ international uses foreign crew and maybe 1 purser or customer services manager who is Australian). Any one of the foreign crew falls ill and they may not have a replacement

It is also possible that JQ110 has passengers but only to the extent that a reduced cabin crew would allow under the regulations. So some passengers are bumped but not others.

Though your TI would probably only cover out of pocket expenses like one day’s accommodation forfeited in Bali. You will need a letter from JQ confirming that the flight was cancelled and you were delayed 24 hours.
It’s an airline delay so I would expect you would be able to claim on TI.

Unfortunately no- I have TI but cancellations due crewing is not covered- you have to chase the airline for faults within their control. Seems to be common exclusion amongst insurers

However, you may be able to claim for one night lost accommodation at least. The crewing issue is to stop people booking themselves on another airline and claiming the cost.
