Jetstar Asia launches Broome to Singapore flights

Not looking for SIN connections by the looks of those times.

Also the first time Jetstar has flown into BME!

Yeah, probably more focused on inbound tourism. If it became more permanent, imagine QF would throw a codeshare on it and try to time it to connect to QF1/2...

Very strange choice.
Why? It’s 3K, so brings inbound tourism from SE Asia (not just SIN).

Although, not being serviced by JQ domestically does seem strange ie international demand but not domestic? Maybe QF group doesn’t want to take pax from the mainline domestic services that traditionally have charged a huge premium in fares.

QF group wont let JQ near BME i suspect, but SIN is allowed as no interest in serving it themselves, indeed 3K are probably better positioned for inbound tourism with a reasonable market presence in SIN. I also wonder if this is first move to keep SQ group from any move back to BME. (Silk air flew this route prior to covid)

3K have flown into DRW and PER previously.

Jetstar would be a logical choice say a few times per week into Broome from a domestic port. We need Bonza to do that heavy lifting for us as QF rips everyone $1k return for the privilege so no reason they would send the lower margin low cost airline in.

Broome is on our to do list one day, but it won’t ever be with cash airfares, only points due to the sheer cost of any airfares. Hopeful that Bonza will jump on Broome eventually once they get a bit bigger.

They still do - well DRW at least for the moment although, that’s probably a tad more two way Asia <-> Oz traffic. So not strange that 3K are picking leisure routes from Asia. I wouldn’t be surprised if CNS made an appearance someday?

3K dropped SIN-DRW quite a while ago, maybe before covid, but i guess QF will pick that up later this year.

JQ fly DRW-DPS.

It came back for a bit after COVID but got cancelled again in July 2022 :(

Of course this is all about Singapore outbound tourism. If BQB had international facilities , it would also be a candidate … WA is a very popular destination for Singaporeans.

But it could also end up being the cheapest way of getting to BME from MEL … via SIN on JQ/3K

I would suggest that the SYD and MEL <> BQB were possibly attempts to head off Bonza, as there's not really any other alternate ports to PER with decent leisure traffic where they could get a competitive edge. Certainly, the articles about the BQB route featured leisure and VFR traffic (and will probably support a non-negligible amount of outbound travel to the east coast as well). It's probably exactly what Bonza would have been looking for.

On top of the govt subsidy, 3K probably has a cost base advantage over JQ so makes sense for this route (at launch anyway). It could possibly bring in traffic from elsewhere in the 3K network (DPS, MNL, etc). I haven't looked at the connections but it could be easier for BME-based traffic to get elsewhere in asia, too.

I agree with your sentiment, but MEL-BQB at least was initially opened for sale in 2019, long before Bonza even existed.

Some of their more recent additions like MEL-HVB and ADL-PPP seem very pointed towards Bonza though.

3K's cost advantage over bigger brother JQ plus the WA Government + BME Airport subsidy probably makes it a viable (seasonal) proposition for 3K for the duration of the subsidy period. At least if it doesn't work out for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, they can simply chose not to return in 2026.

This would make for a 'cheap' QFF reward seat, if you wanted to see top end WA on the way to SIN. Sounds like fun. But, an interesting route. Is this for BME locals or Asian tourists on their way to the Kimberleys?

Predominantly Singapore based tourists heading to Broome. Market of 5m vs what 20.000? 40,000 if you include those within a 6hr drive (Port Hedland ).

Inbound Tourism (from SE Asia), thus the WA Government subsidy via the aviation fund.
