For those who did not know him:

The Australian 28 November 2012 said:
FORMER Qantas boss James Strong has today accepted the post of non-executive chairman of V8 Supercars, replacing the retiring Tony Cochrane.

Now Strong, who ran the "Flying Kangaroo" between 1983 and 2001, joins current directors Andrew Gray (Archer Capital), Brad Lancken (Archer Capital), Roland Dane (TeamVodafone), and Brad Jones (Team BOC) and chief executive David Malone.
He has an enviable record in Australian business, chairing the board of Woolworths for more than 11 years. He is also a former director of the Australian Grand Prix and is also a current director of Dorna Sports, which manages MotoGP worldwide.
V8 Supercars CEO David Malone says V8 Supercars will benefit from Strong's experience.
"James has an impeccable record in corporate governance and administration for two decades and brings to V8 Supercars a wealth of experience," Malone said.

Loves wearing colourful bowties. Thoughts are with his family and friends.

RIP - A pivotal figure in the history of QF (amongst many other companies)

RIP,

We have lost some great characters in past few days.

............and rode the cream of Italian bikes - an MV Agusta

Sad and unexpected news. I had a lot of time for him as CEO of QF (despite my innate distrust of bow-tie wearers). 68 is way too young to go.

The first thing I thought of when I heard the news was Jack Tilburn's ranting and raving at the most recent AGM...

Regardless, R.I.P. to a well respected person who passed away too early.

Definitely too young.
One of the few CEOs in this country who had a personality and was instantly recognisable.
Presided over the mergers and float that made Qantas recognisable as the domestic and international airline that it is today.

Shocked to hear of his passing so young. He was supposed to be fit and active so it is a lesson for everyone to "live for today".

One of life's gentlemen.

It was after his tenure as CEO that things started going downhill at QF. IMHO

My work has brought me into many contacts with James over the years. A very good man -- one i had a few professional disagreements with (about nothing to do with aviation) -- but always open, respectful and engaged. I'm genuinely surprised by his passing. I last saw him less than a year ago and he showed no signs of ill health. Very sad. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

He passed away following post surgery complications, agree with the "live for today" principle!

I was saddened to hear the news of his passing this morning. I have met him a couple of times through my work and he always struck me as being a true gentleman who would listen to both sides of a story. A big loss to Australian corporate leadership. RIP.

ABC managing director Mark Scott summed up a life lived well on Twitter: "Saddened to hear of the death of James Strong. Captain of industry, advocate for the arts, adventurer, gentleman, and wonderful bow-ties."
