JAL Deepens Restructuring

Japan Airlines will contract more than originally planned, with further routes to be canned, Boeing 747s to be retired earlier and job losses to increase by about 20%.

Under pressure from the government and creditors to restructure itself more thoroughly, the ailing carrier will make a second attempt at designing the reduced network it will keep after emerging from its court-supervised bankruptcy.

Most of this however is due to the change in cargo ops that Serfty had reported earlier-the jobs were initially going to be hived off into a joint venture which is now not proceeding.

JAL is a fine airline. Not as good as ANA, but better than most. Politically, lt's not on the table for it it fail.

With Denpasar-Narita and Denpasar-Osaka going I think that would just leave Denpasar-Hong Kong as the only flight allowing a xONEx to commence in relatively cheap Indonesia.

Not at all. Jakarta (CGK) and SUB (Surabaya) are also served by oneworld - so there is CGK-HKG, CGK-NRT, SUB-HKG are the other three routes for xONE3's. Add in CGK-SYD for xONE4's etc.

The original plan by Japanese government (MLIT) has way deeper cut than the one leaked out last week. E.g. Tokyo (NRT) - Sydney (SYD) was on that list too! You can find the original MLIT's plan on my blog: jal-pak.blogspot.com/2010/04/mlits-original-suspension-plan-36.html (sorry can't post link yet as a new member)

Well SYD-NRT is served by QF (and indirectly JQ) so I can see why JL may cut that. Afterall they can always codeshare.

What I want to see is NH start serving NRT-SYD to provide *A options but I guess this is just wishful thinking.

Yes a big welcome Jalpak.I have been an interested reader of your posts on FT and your blog.

+1 from me, welcome Pak - look forward to your updates.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!

If JAL does withdraw from Australia, NH may pick up the route! NH is expecting big expansion of its international network this year. JAL's withdrawal is one of the deciding factors to determine which route to launch.

According to the media, the Japanese bankers are still not onboard with JAL's restructuring plan. Japanese Bankers Association Chief made a comment yesterday saying there will be no more aid for JAL unless the banks could agree on JAL's restructuring plan (search for "JAL Rehab Plan Must Be Verified For More Aid: Bank Assn Chief" on google will give you the article on nikkei . com) :(

If NH started service again to Oz, well my life would be just peachy.

JALPak, welcome to AFF.

JAL CEO Inamori had his first interview since he took over the job. He is in fierce negotiation with the bankers right now and he is trying to keep the job and route cuts as they have originally planned. Hopefully he will win :D

To read the WSJ article, google "New Chairman Vows to Revive JAL"

Thanks samh004! But unless you have subscription to the WSJ, you probably still have to google it to read the complete article ;)

(geeze I still can't post links...not even when the link is in the reply qoute )

JAL could start by cutting some flights internally. Haneda to Sendai is ridiculous - ¥20 000 each way and it takes almost as long as the bullet train, and the shink gets you to Tokyo or Ueno whereas you have to travel in from Haneda Airport to get into TYO proper.

And the train is only ¥10 000 or so each way.

I thought that would be the case, but it appears the whole article is available for viewing. I don’t have a subscription.

I think you need to get to 10 posts to post links, so I’m sure you’ll get there before this story ends ;)
