It all has to do with loads.QF obviously decide that not enough pax fly from MEL therefore simpler to have them fly to SYD and onwards.I would say not enough of these companies weren't paying for business class.
As Sydney-Japan is less than 10 hours a lot of companies then only send their staff economy.
I am waiting to see Brisbane-Tokyo or Brisbane-Cairns-Tokyo show up on Jetstar A330.
Same story for BNE-several years ago the JL 747 would have a full Y cabin.On my last BNE-NRT the 767's Y class was no more than 60% full.Sadly QLD is no longer attractive to Japanese tourists.
So yes QF seats will almost certainly be BNE-CNS-NRT.I guess a direct BNE-NRT on JQ is possible but with JQ already having Japan flights out of CNS and OOL but I doubt it.I will definitely be transiting SYD when flying to Japan.
