JAL Deepens Restructuring

I would say not enough of these companies weren't paying for business class.

As Sydney-Japan is less than 10 hours a lot of companies then only send their staff economy.

I am waiting to see Brisbane-Tokyo or Brisbane-Cairns-Tokyo show up on Jetstar A330.
It all has to do with loads.QF obviously decide that not enough pax fly from MEL therefore simpler to have them fly to SYD and onwards.
Same story for BNE-several years ago the JL 747 would have a full Y cabin. On my last BNE-NRT the 767's Y class was no more than 60% full.Sadly QLD is no longer attractive to Japanese tourists.
So yes QF seats will almost certainly be BNE-CNS-NRT.I guess a direct BNE-NRT on JQ is possible but with JQ already having Japan flights out of CNS and OOL but I doubt it.I will definitely be transiting SYD when flying to Japan.

Similar to psi999... I have a NRT-SFO booked in late December: AA codeshare, JL metal. Any chances AA will take over this flight? Or will I be rebooked from Haneda?

This is a bit of a bummer - I'm flying to SFO and gf is flying home to PER a couple of hours later. Would prefer not to have to go to separate airports. Only other option I can think of is NRT-LAX-SFO on AA.

OT for a moment - I'm QPNB and gf is flying home on a J award. What are the chances of us getting into the same lounge (assuming I end up on AA metal)? Dunno what the AA lounge is like at NRT, but I do feel more at home in the QF lounge.

Not to mention HND-SFO will have a later departure time than NRT-SFO due to restrictions. It will likely depart at around midnight, say 00:05 (JAL hasn't officially announced the schedule yet and this is just my educated guess). I think NRT-LAX-SFO will be your better option.

If AA wants to take over, they will need to acquire the slots at NRT first, which IMHO is unlikely...

Thanks for the info JALPak. Will keep an eye out with interest. Although seeing gf off at NRT would be nice, transferring with luggage to HND late evening doesn't appeal. Looks like it's back on the AA LAX flight for me.

I would pick JAL's LAX flight over AA's on any day. Much better food, service, IFE (130 channels of on demand video, audio and game contents), etc...Not to mention it departs 1hour 20min later than AA's which will give you extra time with your gf at NRT ;) The only thing better on AA's flight is probably the wider seats in Y LOL

So called JAL, could not have been easier to deal with.

Our flights had already been updated in their system to route via Syd (with connecting flight BNE-SYD).

Ended up deciding to catch the last flight out of BNE (~8 days earlier (and outside of the discount period we originally booked) returning via SYD.

Also upgraded the return journey to Premium Economy for $500.

Great company to deal with.

JAL FA's offer a high service level. It would be interesting if you did a brief TR comparing economy and PE.

In order to do a TR, I have to fly on PY an Y first. Thanks to all the crazy upgrade discounts, I still haven't had a chance to do that since they switched LAX-NRT to 773  I am actually interested to find out what the cutbacks are in Y cuz one day I will have to go back to the back cabin when I run out of miles/upgrade points to upgrade my flights.

Well turns out JAL only charged me $300 for the PE upgrade.... WIN!

Have used JAL before, and loved it. But as I fly out of Melb, and have to us Sydney. I will not use Sydney, I hate the airport, and the biggest hatred is the bus between terminal. It is the worsest airport in Australia. But I would fly with JAL anyday they are great.:p
