I'm looking at having to overnight in Jakarta airport between flights; late arrival, early departure. I've never been to the city - is there anything recommended to see in a day, if I went the day before - like a day trip out of the city? Or is the traffic enough to deter from attempting anything? I wouldn't want to spend any more than a day.

The National Museum & precinct looks interesting - anyone visited?

Are taxis a practical way to get around? Uber?

No Uber in Indonesia, your choice is Grab or Go Jek for ride share apps. I prefer Grab as can pay by credit card, Go Jek you will need cash. Taxis are also fine for short trips, stick with Bluebird (also an App)

The traffic is fine to get to the city, probably as not as bad as it seems, if not during peak hours. But in any case, just catch the train from the Airport, its running now.

AFAIK there is plenty to see in North (old ) Jakarta areas, I have visited the city a gazillion times but I havent been to the north, I hangout a couple hours south and only play golf, know nothing about interesting places :) Check out Klook for some ideas on tours/sights. As for other sectors of Jakarta I think not much - most locals hang out at huge malls - because air conditioned.

If you wanna know what nightlife is about, check out www.jakarta100bars.com, study carefully. There are definitely places some conservative people wouldnt want to accidentally go to.

Despite its reputation as not a tourist city, there is some absolute brilliant things you can do here, and none are set up for the white tourist, IMHO its a hidden gem

Finally, be patient, and be extra patient.
