Hi all,

I found a rather curious J fare, online, to LHR from BNE, via SYD and NRT. I got a local TA to verify it and they put the fare on hold for me. Of course that means I can no longer find it online and the TA's credit card fees are extortionate. They would waive these if they were doing a price match but they claimed they weren't since my print out of the online fare was not from the same day (last Saturday even though it was still visible online that morning) as when I went in to see them.

I called QF Premium earlier, since they will be the ticketting airline and asked if they could book it but was told 'no', because they can't sell a JL codeshare on BA (NRT-LHR). Is that correct, should I call back again?

TIA.

Not really relevant as this was not what I asked, but.... $16 online, QF would be $60, TA $350.
Shoot! I thought it may have been relevant depending on just how good the fare was - as you are no doubt well aware everything has a value - what % we talking here?

I think you're stuck as it will be the only option to ticket.

If the fare is so cheap (you havent stated the price......) then the $350 is largely irrelevant (IMO).

Your alternative is to price shop to another TA and ask them to ticket - for a lower fee. If they can find the fare.

%age was 3, which even for Amex is OTT. Anyway, it turns out they were already doing a price match, but had just printed the wrong documentation so they are waiving the fee. Nothing to see here.

Sheepishly skulks off back to corner of room

Thanks. I just assumed that since QF were quoted as the ticketting airline that they would be able to offer the fare on the phone. I guess only TAs can do mixed airline fares.

Which is why I'm such a fan of TAs (especially mine). Lots of combos and clever things not available on-line or from one airline.

Mine charges a cc fee of 2% for Mcard or Amex; I usually pay by bank transfer when they are no longer able to push back ticketing any longer.

It's usually common practice in my experience for the operating carrier of the first (int) sector to be the ticketing carrier UNLESS it's a fare sold specifically by another on their stock (the LH fares for years worked this way, even if they were combos with QF/UA/AC etc). With most combos that aren't marketed/sold as a special fare by carrier X, while it would seem that the ticketing carrier SHOULD be able to offer an equal/equivalent fare, it may well be that QF's agents just can't see an opaque(to them) discounted consolidator type fare.

Another thought if the fare is through NRT and involves JL codes on other carriers, that JL would perhaps be offering the fare. hard to know.
Either way, it's been sorted :)

I often see these fares pop up on things like sky scanner, and some of them look really good on paper(er screen). I've seen a few "JL" fares involving codes on just about anything BUT JL on flights to the USA (AA) and europe (BA)

Thanks for the reply. It's certainly not a 'normal' routing being:

BNE(QF) --> SYD(QF) --> NRT(JL but BA really) --> LHR(JL) --> HND(QF) --> SYD(QF) --> BNE.

2 pax for under $12k. I found it on Kayak but got the TA to check it. I used to use Skyscanner too but in my recent experience, too many fares appear to be vapour fares when you click through.

Yep JL has some excellent codeshare deals. I need D class for full AA miles on JL and luckily these types of fares typically book into D ; JL is often cheaper in D than competitors in I.

Yep, the whole itinerary has booked into D. I'll be crediting to QF though.

Found the fare on ITA Matrix and also E/F. Fare basis is DRTCEAU1. It's a "companion fare" requiring at least 2 to travel. Base fare is $5100. Prices with tax on ITA at $5,999 pp. Does not appear to have any restrictions on travel dates. Perhaps QF could not find it because they were not searching for 2 pax? Routings look flexible - you can even go via MOW!!

Nice work there.

Be aware when crediting to QF the D secors between Japan and oz (v.v.) wll credit nicely, but SC's will be reduced on euro legs (JL/BA sectors).. if that's at all important.

nice deal. pity I'm a singleton so can't take advantage of similar :)

Thanks. OT: I'm all over the reduced SC earn when on partner airlines, even on routes QF don't fly, but it's not a bad SC haul in the end. I am bothered about SCs but not to the point where I'm going to spend another $4-5k to fly QF all the way and still not earn enough in my membership year to retain WP.

This would be an interesting option if I could do MEL-HKG-LHR-MAD at a similar cost
