J dress code

Hi folks,

I'm a always-economy flyer (the vast majority of my travel is for work, and anything but economy is vanishingly rare in the IT industry) who's about to take business flights for the first time as part of an RTW award.

Knowing the controversy around here on visible male shins or (gasp!) toes from the QC threads, what's the community view on shorts and sandals in J?

Note - I reserve the right to ignore what you all say .

You pay the money - you wear what is comfortable.

Shorts and sandals are quite commonly worn in business.



If you wore crocs however, you will be turned away, and the police called (fashion police that is!)

rtyulop you can travel wearing comfortable clothes.
I do see some wear stubbies,thongs and torn tank tops which could keep you out of business lounges in some parts of the world.

The fact that you asked the question in the first place shows you have consideration for your fellow travellers.
These days commonsense prevails and you wear what is comfortable and practical.

I always fly in comfortable clothes - for me that is a polo shirt, good shorts and Colorado joggers/sneakers (with socks of course).

I did a J trip on SQ in April and I was the most under-dressed person in the J cabin though. I am just not comfortable flying long-haul in jeans/trousers. I felt a little self-conscious to start, but then I just got stuck into the booze and I soon forgot all about it.

I always wear jeans and shirt and change into the PJ's when we are at cruising altitude, then change back for the stop somewhere in Asia, take a shower in the lounge and when we are back up I change in the PJ's again.

Reason I always wear jeans and shirt and have a jumper and jacket with me is because my routes are mostly to Europe which means that it is winter either where I am coming from or where I am going to. Also last October I missed my connection in Helsinki and was stuck there for a day and decided to visit the city. I can tell you it was freezing cold and I was happy I had some extra clothes on me.

I think you can almost wear anything in J.
The worst I have ever seen was Keith Urban on a BNE-LAX flight. We were casually dressed but felt were very over dressed by comparison.

Whatever you want really (within reason*)...different strokes for different folks.

I wore shorts on a flight last year I think for the first time ever (and possibly the last), but it was a flight Fira-Athens and shorts were the norm, and I had not had the opportunity to don longs.

I just prefer to wear long pants when flying. I'll never get too hot in them on the plane, but I may get too cold in shorts. If I'm arriving at a hot destination then I can cop it until I get the opportunity to change into shorts.

* "within reason" obviously varies for different people but I have no issue with other people wearing shorts. Same with sandals, I wouldn't wear them on a plane but if others want to, why not?

Weather and Distance is my choice.
Distance - weather = Dress .
Longer the distance the more likely I will stay in shorts (and domestically any further north of BNE). Int jeans and a comfortable shirt.

Never wear THONGS (or Flip-flops for those who prefer that enchilada )

As long as what you wear is clean (and I'm sure it would be) and you are comfortable too bad what anyone else might think. I wouldn't dress like I was going to the beach, but I wouldn't dress like it was a first night at the opera either. If you want lounge access though it might be an idea to see what codes apply.

Wear what you want, I would just say that it can get cold onboard with shorts and t-shirt (even though you get a blanket) and bear in mind the weather at your destination. It is funny to see people get on in shorts in a heat wave and get off in a freezing blizzard...

That's the spirit!!

Always comfort first and wash down those inadequacies with Gin.

Wear a suit, tie and crisp white shirt with cufflinks and shiny black shoes..... Then stare down all of those pax who are less dressed than you...and randomly offer to sign autographs.... Just for fun.... :mrgreen:

I flew down CNS-SYD-MEL-SYD in shorts a few months ago, jumped straight into a cab at SYD and before the door closed the cabbie yelled "Jesus! You must be from f...k..n Queensland maate!!"

He was utterly confused when I explained I'd just flown in from MEL
