It pays to buy travel insurance

It was a DONE4 ex CMB; it was not a "Ticket to return to Australia" even though it passed though Oz.

If I have understood you correctly, to be fair some "paid" TI would also not cover for the same reason, or the wording about coverage ceasing on return to ones home address on other piad policies.

Where on earth did you go? Raffles was only $28 or so for an appointment last year!

With such stuff I generally use an annual policy - no individual trip within that coverage is more than 30 days etc.

I do endeavour to maximise my coverage value.

e.g. I used an annual policy in 2015 from 1 Jan to 31 Dec. I departed on one trip 1st Jan. My last trip I returned Dec 31st.

My next journey is covered as per post #6 ...

I rely on CC TI if booking a ticket using the CC. I will stress the importance of having TI as within 4 days of return from my last Euro trip in September I became unexpectedly very ill. The cost so far has been around $30k which is mostly covered by my health insurance. Had this happened more than 4 days earlier whilst travelling it would have been covered under TI.

Ask yourself if you would you be prepared to risk bearing this sort of cost yourself when travelling without TI?

We'll be flying SYD-LHR in July as part of a 280K J One World Award and doing a cruise that visits Norway, Iceland and Greenland. When we return to the UK we fly LCY-ZRH on the same day the ship arrives back in port at Tilbury but we booked that flight separately in case of any delays so the rest of our flights on the OW tickets are not affected if there is a delay with the ship arriving back in port at the correct time. After travelling around Switzerland we'll be travelling by train to Venice to join a cruise that finishes in Rome. The port on the day before the cruise finishes is Naples, so not a long distance to travel on the last night of the cruise before we arrive back at Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, so hopefully it will be on time, and if there was a delay arriving in Naples that made it appear we could be late arriving back in Rome we could always ask to leave the ship there and make our own way to Rome.

We have taken a chance and booked for me to fly FCO-LHR-YYC on the day we finish the cruise and my wife is flying FCO-LHR-SIN-SYD, all with BA. I am spending time in the Canadian Rockies and there is something I wanted to do in Jasper two days later so I wanted to fly out of Rome that day. I then fly to JFK on a separate ticket and will finish the OW Award ticket flying CX JFK-HKG-SYD. We have previously finished cruises in Europe and flown home the same day without any problems but I know that delays can happen so want to be prepared.

I have an Amex Platinum Charge card and have activated the cover by charging all of the QF taxes to the card so will have coverage for the trip. I also have an ANZ FF Black and a Westpac Earth Black card and have charged over $250 of other costs to the ANZ card, and over $500 to the Westpac card. The Westpac insurance only covers my wife if she travels the entire journey with me but she also has an ANZ Black card as a primary cardholder so we have charged over $250 to her card as well so she has coverage with ANZ for her trip. I phoned ACE Insurance a couple of days ago and was told that she will still be covered by the Amex Platinum Charge insurance even though she is not travelling the entire trip with me and that, as my spouse, she would have insurance coverage even if she was doing the trip entirely herself.

We have relied on the Credit Card insurances for all our travels for quite a few years now but have never had to claim. Someone I travelled with on a cruise in South America two years ago had to see a Doctor on the ship and the $700 charge was paid by his ANZ CC insurance without any problems.

After reading through the PDSs for all three policies and not seeing anything I have phoned both ACE Insurance and QBE, who provide insurance for both ANZ and Westpac, to enquire if there is any coverage if there was a delay with the ship arriving back in port that caused us to miss our flights and have been told by both companies that we would not have coverage for the air tickets for any flights that we miss and that would then also cause the airline to cancel the remaining flights on the itinerary. We would have coverage if a delay in one flight caused us to miss the next flight but not from a cruise. I asked at ACE if their paid policy would cover this situation and after he checked he said that no, their policies would not cover flights in this situation.

Does anyone know of any paid travel insurance policies that would cover this situation? I've had a look at 1Cover and reading their PDS it appears that they may, and I'll call them tomorrow and ask. Under "Alternative Travel Expenses" it says "We will pay your reasonable additional travel expenses to reach a wedding, funeral, conference, sporting event or prepaid travel/tour arrangements on time if your scheduled overseas transport is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted and that means you would not arrive on time". A lot of policies, CC and paid, provide cover for travel delays that pay for additional accommodation and meal expenses but there is no provision for paying for replacement flights.

This is a common issue with travel insurance.

As you have found out, almost all insurance policies (paid or through credit cards) will cover you to get to an important event (one that cannot wait for you - like a wedding, key note speaker at a conference etc). But coverage for missed connections is much harder to find. For many people on a single ticket a missed connection will be covered by the airline.

There are a couple of policies providing this cover however - insure4less and also, IIRC, worldnomads. You'll need to check their respective PDSs, but insure4less will cover the cost of replacements flights provided you intended to arrive at the connecting airport at the maximum time recommended by the airline for check-in for the flight.

For example, if QF opens check-in 3 hours before departure at LAX, your arriving transportation must be scheduled to have you at the airport at the 3 hour mark (not the minimum connection time allowed).

I purchased an insure4less policy for a family member who was travelling on separate tickets via Asia to the USA, connecting to a domestic sector. Cover was provided in the event they missed the paid domestic as they were scheduled to arrive in the USA for their UA flight 3hrs20mins before departure.

So have a look at the PDS for insure4less and see if it covers boat connections as well.

Thanks MEL_Traveller. I have looked at the website for insure4less and it shows a maximum coverage for a Missed Departure / Connection of $1000 with the top Excel Plus policy which wouldn't be enough to cover J flights. I called 1cover and was told that there would be cover for replacement tickets if the ship was delayed so long as it was not caused by a mechanical breakdown. According to the PDS they cover for up to $5,000 for a single and $10,000 for a family. There is no cover for the financial collapse of any transport, tour or accommodation provider and also no cover for an act or threat of terrorism.

I then called World Nomads and that they would cover up to $5,000 single and $10,000 family in this situation if the delay was caused by severe weather, natural disasters, hijacking or strikes but there would be no cover if there was a mechanical breakdown. I would have to claim from the cruise company in this situation.

Edit: I've just called Covermore and they are the same as World Nomads for things covered and also no cover for mechanical breakdown.

I would think the most common reasons for a delay of a ship arriving in port at the end of a cruise would be weather or mechanical breakdown and since mechanical breakdown isn't covered by the companies I've checked with I'm thinking that we'll just rely on the CC insurance we have through Amex or ANZ.

Worldnomads cover for travel not starting/finishing in Oz, which is most of my travel.
Checked out TI for Mrs P on a visit to KBL. Noone much covers 'do not travel' destinations other than bespoke insurers at (very) bespoke premiums.
Cheers skip

I buy an annual policy. It was real cheap until turning 50 and now still ~AUD300/year with USA coverage only for 72 hours which suits me fine.

And many policies include in the definition of such events concerts and sporting events. An alternative cheap "insurance" top up to activate that I have used (albeit inadvertently the first time), is to have such a concert or sporting ticket booked for the arrival time at the destination. If it is something you are planning on attending (which it was the first time this occurred for me), well and good, but if you are just after the insurance, look for the cheapest concert or sporting tickets you can find for your destination and arrival time, and compare the cost with the cost of alternative insurance....
