sounds like they are just installing the same e-gates used for inward customs on the outbound also?

I'm pretty sure they've had this tech at arrivals too, at least at PER. It's called SmartGate.

I was told by an immigration officer that " Departures" Smart Gates will start on July 1st in Sydney.

That's nice. Given the speed of airport developments in PER, we'll probably get it in 2018

Yes, the additional government funding has allowed the start of SmartGates to be used for departing passengers.
