Is the weather at OOL airport that bad?

Eep! Glad we decided to drive home from the coast this afternoon. OK when we left, but the rain got hesver the closer we got to Brisbane. My SIL said the wind later this afternoon was so strong at Mooloolaba there was foam from the surf being splattered against the windows of the 4th floor apartment they were staying in (behind the caravan park & park area).

Thats a fair distance from the beach. We went to Mooloolaba & the Spit today. The sand was being pushed up onto the road/car park. Never seen that in my 30+ years living on the coast.

Have seen more intense rain on the coast...not so with the wind.

Still its not a cyclone.....in my real young days we lived in Townsville & Mackay......they cop it up there!

Wow. $5000 for a BBQ?

Mine was $4.5k, 10 years ago. Went full stainless in the belief it would be easier to keep clean......it isn't. If I had my time agian, I'd go $150 Big W specials and "retire" them perhaps more frequently.

Overnight, plenty of wild and wooly weather. It's still gusting considerably but it's certainly easing.

Happily, only very minor flooding in the lower section of our backyard, part of the garage sideing torn off, one awning on our caravan damaged and a new leak inside the house identified (which now just adds to the list of jobs I've got to do).

VA haven't updated their advice page since yesterday, but I'll hazard a guess that todays flights will still be restricted. Lots of rain still happening here and it's still gusting to 50 knots (my guess), from time to time.

Similar weather in BNE. would love to chat with my neighbour, the VA Training Captain, to see what he can pull up on BNE and OOL.

You could get me on a plane, but I doubt it would take off

Both airport have very bumpy approaches, significant crosswinds approaching aircraft limits and in the case of OOL, lots of birds, 42 kts is 77kmh. OOL is on divert at present for arrivals with VA cancelling flights on a rolling basis.

I have a flight this afternoon and still no idea what is happening.

The VA website lists one cancellation from OOL today but looking at Flightstats most flights until lunchtime have been cancelled. Which one is correct? How hard is it to have accurate updates?

Very amateurish and leaves a bitter taste in my mouth....

JohnK, you need to look at route flight status as advised for the latest updates which shows more than one flight cancelled.

More flights added to travel alert now.

So I just sit here and wait? My flight this afternoon is just for fun and I can travel anytime before 4th February?

My stupidity for making these bookings with Virgin. They have a long long way to go and are not much better than Jetstar....

Oops, edit out double info............missed JohnKs post

Just head announcement on BNE radio station that OOL is closed due to high winds. Apartments/buildings on the Gold Coast have had windows blown in.

HUH? It's not an IT glitch this time round and JQ flights are experiencing the same disruptions

I can understand your frustrations but didn't you choose VA into OOL rather than BNE because there were good prices/redemptions at the time? (sorry, I can't remember all the details). In any case, it could just as easily have been BNE affected. We cannot play God and unfortunately, it's one of the downsides of commuting for work via the air.

I think all the airlines are restricting flights into OOL so it's not just VA. Do you have travel insurance? If so, rebook into BNE ASAP and claim on the policy. Remember the low is headed south and it's possible SYD may also be affected later.

I can whinge about a number of VAs shortcomings, but I don't think this is one of them. I hope you manage to get to work John, but your safety is more important than work.

There is a natural disaster going on. People are dying. Surely some perspective wouldn't go astray?

Why would anyone fly just for fun in this weather, its a bit like the fools down at Brighton checking out the water, driving through it and creating wakes that flood peoples garages. Stay at home unless travel is essential!

I have travel insurance but it is not going to cover much when you factor the $200 excess.

I am frustrated at the lack of communication. Are the flights to OOL cancelled or are they being diverted to BNE? Yesterday I was told that all flights that were cancelled to OOL went to BNE instead.

And yes I do realise that a natural disaster is occurring but not much I can do about it. I have enough problems trying to take care of myself.

First bunch were diverts but now the airlines are realizing how bad it is they are not running full stop, Brisbane now has its own issues with equipment malfunctions. I note that the cancellations are being done in enough time to make sure alternate arrangements can be made while later flights are still being open, as per previous disruptions the more cancellations the more backlog and work there is to clear, hence its a case by case basis.

There may have been sarcasm in my post.

And no I do not want to risk my life but my travel is essential and if the airlines are flying then I am going to do everything possible to get to work tomorrow. People can see this as a whinge but to me it is a lot more important. I have no sick days and no annual leave and I cannot afford to lose 4 days pay.

And no use offering me another flight to use by 4th February and no point refunding my $39 either as I have another flight coming back on Fri and then going back again next Sunday.
