IPad opinions?

The things I want for the future are some link to home automation (turn the AC on from the train would be nice)...

I think there’s an app for that, but it’d only come in an app, not from Apple.

If people dont buy V1 there wont be a V2 and beyond. I bought a V1 iPod touch, still have it and it does exactly what I need it to do.

I’ve learnt that lesson, though some work fine. I waited for the iPhone 3Gs though.

You can always wait for the next best thing but if you do you will always be waiting for the next best thing.

And there you have the conundrum.

Besides whats $500 - $900 for gadgetry amongst friends? Its not like a MacBook Pro. Mind you, I would rather pay $3k for a iPad that had full OSX and a range of capabilities than $500 for a slab of averageness....

With a netbook that is easily corrected. I have an eeePC 701 and it can easily play Youtube videos. Admittedly, you will tax out the memory if you try and run too many of them.

I'm surprised that you can't get an app, plugin or software workaround that will work for iPhone and/or (thus) iPad.

If the iPhone has shown us anything, it’s that a physical keyboard isn’t needed anymore. I think the resolution of the device is slightly widescreen, but it displays 720p anyway, so what does screen shape matter? It does have video-out, through the 30-pin dock port, it was one of the few things to come out of the launch and be picked up on for what this could mean potentially. For everything else, fair enough though it’s not marketed as a netbook

All apps are approved by Apple, I think Adobe might have made some sort of flash app, for loading websites or such, but Apple didn’t approve it. I’m sure it probably drained the battery much too fast.

If your jailbreak you probably can run flash, though I’m not sure what the performance is actually like. As I don’t hear about it all the time, I doubt it’s amazing

Fair enough - I don't need that much computing power when I am on the train, plane or in meetings.

When I do need that much power I want a 24in screen not a 10in.

Actually, my 701 is an underclocked Celeron. That's arguably worse than an Atom, but full screen flash? Nah, doesn't fit the bill most of the time anyway (full screen hi-def/hi-res video, forget it - it is as choppy as heck). In saying that, most low-res flash is OK and displays OK.

To be fair, Flash isn't great technology as this thread has said time and time again, as well as being blasted in the mainstream. Its successor, however, is guilty of the crime of dragging its feet, whilst Adobe are getting away with memory leaks, ineffective memory usage and security vulnerabilities!

Apple iPad to kick start media tablet market

Apple iPad has launched a new market segment that will see sales of four million units this year and annual sales of 57 million by 2015, according to market research firm ABI.

"The main focus of media tablets is entertainment. A tablet will not replace a laptop, netbook or mobile phone, but will remain an additional premium or luxury product for wealthy industrialised markets for at least several years," according to an ABI Research report.

ABI defines media tablets as having a touchscreen measuring 5 to 11 inches and offering wifi connectivity along with video and gaming capabilities.

Is Apple's iPad a netbook killer?

Do netbook makers have much to fear from Apple's new supergadget?

If you believe Apple head honcho Steve Jobs, netbooks suck. He does have a point. Tiny netbook computers were always intended to be a compromise - low power, small keyboard, small screen and no optical drive. Considering how popular netbooks have become, it seems these are compromises many people are prepared to make in order to own a small, cheap computer that can still meet most of their day to day needs. With a price tag on par with your average netbook, the iPad is intended to win over these people to the Mac side of The Force.

People need to understand that the LAST thing they want is for people to not buy a macbook and buy an iPad instead, hence why its supposed to be a new product category NOT a laptop replacement

Surely anyone who thinks about it 2 seconds will realise it works exactly like an iPod or iPhone in that everything is set up through iTunes, so you need a computer with iTunes of your own to transfer files and apps to it.

Then again, half the iPhone population in Australia seems not to recognise they can get additional functionality from syncing to their computer.

With the exception of the iPhone and the Powerbooks. The 1st gen iPhone, design and construction quality wise, is streets ahead of the 3G and 3GS. I miss my first gen one. Sure, it had to be hacked to work outside the USA (which turned into a plug in and click affair very quickly), and had no 3G, but the metal back was far far sturdier than the 3G/S (my 3G is so cracked it's bad, i'm just hoping the next gen is similar to the iPad and the original iPhone).

I had a 12" Powerbook as well, a week or so after they came out. Was my first Apple product ever. It lasted for 3-4 years before I accidentally dropped it, was replaced by another, then that lasted almost as long before I did similarly.

I’d expect Apple to continue their aluminium shell printing into the iPhone, though I’m not sure how that’d affect signal, as we all know the plastic MacBooks have better wireless strength compared to the aluminium Pro’s.

I had a 1st gen 17” PowerBook, but don’t feel as strongly about it. It lasted right up until 2007, which is 3-4 years I think, but then an internal screw came loose and shorted the logic board. Apple wanted more than the latest at the time MBP’s to replace it for me. It was out of warranty, but I don’t feel it was fair that an internal screw that I’d never got near wasn’t their fault.

They first gen iPhone's had the bottom 3/4" in plastic for the antenna required for wifi/2G/BT etc. They just went to 'all plastic' to make it easier in the 3G/S, so they may do what they're doing with the iPad 3G and put a 'window' up the top of plastic, similar to the iPod Touches.
