I have seen a (closed) thread regarding the Talkatone app which enables international calls on WiFi (cheaply). Just wondering if anyone has recently used it successfully to ring Australia from overseas?? Suggestions for other methods/apps also welcome. (Recently used my UK prepaid Orange sim to ring Oz a few times and it cost a fortune. (Admittedly it was to the incredibly INEPTCitibank, customer service, so took much longer than necessary)

Um get those you contact a phone and use VIBER!

Not Citi though. ;)

Just called my mum (Worcester to Melbourne) using Viber on wifi and works a treat. I always only use Viber.

How does Viber do it? It's a fantastic service. Plus I can see if Master P, currently in Thailand has been online even if he hasn't messaged. Just a nice peace of mind.

Simple to person using the same app: Skype/ Viber/ Line/Tango/ Kakao/ Whatsapp
Simple to person without PC/mobile: Skypeout/ Viberout

More complex but probably cheaper: SIP client on the phone using one of the many SIP services.

As long as you have access to wifi you can use Skype, Viber etc.

Have only used Skype so far & while Skype to Skype is free, if you're using Skype to call a landline it might 9c per minute so you will need to have credit in your Skype account prior to calling.

I think the minimum amount is AUD16.00 so do this before you depart Australia.

Note that using Skype to call mobiles is more expensive than landlines.

Additional information.......As long as you have access to a better than ordinary wifi connection you can use Skype, Viber.

If the internet is slow, I find both both Skype and Viber (especially) become painful with dropouts or distortions etc.

With local phone, it also works like a Calling Card and you can be connected through a local number to your destination number. Works great with no/poor internet.

Plus most US and UK free calls are free (beware 0845 though).

My family all have apple devices so I Facetime or Facetime Audio. Usually have a local sim so is cheap or free (depending on the data plan) or is free with the Wifi. Audio only works well on a weak connection as well.

If you need to make outgoing calls to a real phone number and using an android phone.

You could download the hangouts dialer on the play store. This will integrate google voice into the google hangouts apps.

You'll get free USA calls when in the US, or when using a VPN to make it look like you're in the US.

Google voice call rates - https://www.google.com/voice/rates

how much from the USA to Oz?

1c US per minute

But if you're making lots of calls to the USA then you'd be better off with a VOIP provider that gives flat rate calls.

MYNETFONE have their neosaver plan which provides 100 calls a month for $5 to 31 international destinations as well as aust landlines.

For low volume but longish calls i'd recommend clickncallnow at 20c untimed to a lot of international destinations. quite reliable.

5.3¢ connection and 2.5¢ per minute for landlines, 9.6¢ and 10.7¢ per minute for mobiles.
