documents do they check at the screening point prior to the gate to depart for US flights, this is the roped off area, there is one at around SYDi gate 56/60 or so I think.
I have not been close to SYDi gate 8 where QFi to the US departs from, so am using the UA gate at SYDi as an example.
This is a few metres before the point where they scan your BP.
Is it just that they check your passport at that point, so that there is no bottleneck at the scanning point for BPs?
ESTA is paperless so it can't be a visa check, but is it that they have a handheld device to scan passports that tells them the holder has an ESTA?
I wouldnt be going off to the US for a long time yet, and things might change by then, but if anyone could provide info, thanks.

No ETSA check - it's just a human looking at your passport and boarding pass to check it matches.

They do a visual on the passport again, I have also had random security checks. Nothing major just take off your shoes or can we see in your camera bag type stuff and wave the metal detector over again.

Of course your ESTA will be electronically matched against your passport - this will not be obvious (unless a match can't be ascertained ).

The ESTA is verified at check in or you wouldn't be issued a boarding pass at checkin.

For those with a hard visa or green card, this would be emtered as a secondary document where no ESTA is present. Again this is done at checkin.

It is primarily to make sure your boarding pass matches the passport but yes, they have a list of names 'random selected' for secondary screening. So if you are on that list, you have to make your way to that secondary screening area

As far as ESTA's go, I would recommend you take a printed copy of the approval. We have been asked more than once to provide it, even though every location says it is not required. Better to have it with you than have to find somewhere to print it off at the airport.

As mentioned above, the secondary screening, from my take, is simply allowing actuall pax into the pre-boarding area, with a few random extra searches.

Had a minor problem with ESTA last week, it would allow my application due to a existing application in place, even though the existing application was not valid (expired). Logging back in managed to cancel the previous one and successfully put in the new application. Hmmmm more fields to enter... mum and dads full names...wonder why they need that

Recently added in October. US is paranoid about passport holders from ESTA nations running off to join ISIS.

I've never been asked to show a printed copy of my ESTA when checking in for a US bound flight anywhere. Only time I've had an issue was in ICN in 2011 where the JL check in supervisor wasn't aware of the rule allowing MRP issued before Oct 25 05 for ESTA, claiming that all passports had to be e-passports for ESTA. I proved it was allowed by showing the US entry stamp from 3 months before.

Just checking if your father is Mohamed Adul and your mother is Amreen Abdul they may question you when your passport says your Barry Smith.

I've been asked for my mother's full name by the Saudi authorities on a visa application, but I think it's for a different reason...
