What is it with flights to DFW and no duty free. Apparently they forgot to build a trolley bay for the DF(duty Free) on all these reconfigured boeings.

Staff on these flights were not praising AJ.

Sounds strange ... but that's the way things work at times!

Just to add another rumour, perhaps it's to reduce the weight of the plane ;)

'Tis simple - the recofigured 744ER's don't have allocated storage space for Duty Free - this has been noted elsewhere.

Not quite so simple though. I was not on a reconfigured 744. 1A was quite pleasant.
Maybe it's a little less simple - since a route might not have duty free due to being regularly operated by a reconfig., they don't sell any at all on that route.

Or maybe it's a weight issue.

In ant case SCL is specifically excluded: (Flying with Qantas | Inflight Duty Free)
[h=3]Available on selected flights[/h]In Sky Shopping is available on Qantas international flights (QF1-QF399), excluding return flights between Australia and New Zealand, Auckland and Los Angeles, Brisbane and Los Angeles, Sydney and Dallas, Sydney and Santiago; also not available on any other routes operated by our newly reconfigured Boeing 747-400 aircraft.

That seems quite logical. My outbound flight was certainly a reconfig, so maybe on these routes they just don't offer duty free at all.

Sarks. Maybe Alan Joyce wants all the cheap grog to himself, well the Irish Cream at least.

Seems a bit odd that a fairly complex company like an airline would forget something like that, especially one that helps customer experience and perhaps even make a buck. Pretty silly to cut out 200kgs just to save fuel when the profits would make up for it and the image of good customer service does to the brand. Oh well, guess the accountants have taken over and run the company now- figures too since they say they're losing money on International flights.

Maybe they still have smaller goods and gifts/toys in lockers and suitcase/s. Surely for kids etc.

Could be transitioning to a smaller or different trolley design, or perhaps the bay gets taken up by more meals now for long flights. Nah. I'd say they're wanting to save weight and instead adopt a "Order before/now and collect later during flight" type system completely & just store the popular items on board in lockers & pack those extra ones that re pre-ordered online. No staff required to do the dreaded hawking.

Anyone know if they get commission on the sales anyways? So perhaps it's a bonus privilege and they WANT to do the DF trolley run. Don't know, doubt it. Perhaps the service is discontinued as people complain of selling or it's just not profitable anymore as people rely on the land stores that have proliferated to even outside airports.

What are good buys on there anyways? I've always wanted the die cast models of the planes but don't want to carry it around. And they're probably cheaper at toy/hobby stores. What does everyone normally buy? Grog is heavy and perfume is cough, but if you must, it's probably cheaper elsewhere.

Anyhow perhaps on your gate ticket they ought to give a warning or notice that no Duty Free is available on that flight, not just to save the alcoholics from going into a frenzied panic, but if one is planning on getting gifts etc or tools like cameras, pens etc to actually use in flight or upon landing. Oh well, just another way airlines could improve with a simple software code update, but won't. Surely if the computers can run yield management software codes, they can add this feature. Would be surprising to see how many flights don't have DF trolleys.

Pretty sure the FA's do get some kind of commission. I think i remember there was a day where the FA's were taught selling techniques.

Found this the other day while trying to see how to rid myself of QF Gift vouchers.

Looks like they missed the revenue:

Reinstatement of Duty Free on Reconfigured B747 Aircraft From 1 August 2012 12 July 2012

From 1 August 2012, the Qantas In Sky Shopping duty free program will be available to customers on both the reconfigured B747-400 aircraft, as well as the other B747-400 aircraft operating on these international routes.

This includes Brisbane - Los Angeles, Brisbane – Singapore, Sydney – Dallas, Sydney – Los Angeles – New York and Sydney – Santiago.

Our duty free offering will be available on all Qantas international flights, with the exception of services between Australia and New Zealand.

I didn't realise people actually liked having the ability to purchase duty-free items aboard the aircraft. I've always found it annoying and hate being asked if I want to make a purchase. I'm ok buying items in a terminal; but in the cabin? No.

Interesting. I got an Advisory Panel survey on Jul11 about a possible 'online store' they're thinking of opening. One of the questions was about in-flight duty free and a subset was "are you aware that some flights no longer offer in-flight duty free for sale?". My response was "No. I never spend cash on over-priced items in the catalogue that I can buy cheaper on arrival" :)

I've used it a few times for last minute 'uh oh forgot' gifts for friends and business gifts etc.

Prices are a bit more expensive but 5-10 here or there doesnt bother me esp if I'm in a rush!! Sometimes the prices are randomly quite cheap (!) but of course never on the stuff I want ;)
