If you take a stopover illegally, what are the ramifications (if any)?

For example, you can pass through Asia twice provided one is without stopover... but what if you do actually take a stopover?

Thanks

Generallly there are no ramifications, the issuing agent could always received an ADM for it, but from experience it rarely happens.

As an agent i've on more than a few occassions sold a 5 stop 26k economy RTW to someone who I knew wanted 6 stops and revaled it after it had been issued to add in the 6th stop without problems.

Airlines, generally dont have the manpower to sit and police how many stops Joe Bloggs is making on his flight vs. what his fare allows, especially when multiple airlines are involved.

Hope this helps

I'm thinking more about what happens if it's issued "ok", but a "time and date" change is subsequently made.

And what's an "ADM" ?

An ADM is an Airline Debtor Memo. It essentially occurs when the TA owes the airline money. In Travel_Guru's example, this would occur because the original fare rules that the ticket was issued on (5 stop) had been violated, and the airline has come back and charged the TA for the upgraded fare (ie. 6 stops+).

The agent making the change should checkc the fare rules before making the change and should say "sorry sir you are a cheater cheater pumpkin eater* and I can't do that". If the change is made and you don't get a call back then you should be fine.

i would not be relying on this as part of my travel plans. I do however recall that serfty scammed something like this on a trip once...

* Sorry havent spoken to anyone outside of hotel staff and office staff for a few days and going a bit stir crazy

Who? Me?

Not me at all!

FWIW, it's almost impossible for me in this respect as I have used a TA ONCE in the last 7 years! And that time was CX in CMB, certainly no finagling in that DONE4!

If you've successfully ticketed such an itinerary with an airline, you'll be fine so long as you don't need to reissue your ticket. The error may well be caught during reissuing.

If it was me, i'd book it through an agent and ask them to issue as paper tkt, that way it only needs the date changed in the GDS and a reval sticker whereas on e-tkt it generally needs to be revalidated by a consolidator who would be likely to check the rules prior to doing so.

I book these tickets ex-NRT and I do not know any Japanese TAs. Unlike the RWSTARs which can be booked with a Canadian TA I know at the price of the cheaper departure point due to the Canadian exception which no longer exists for xONExs.

Then again a lot of TAs do make mistakes with these things so who knows how many 'illegal' itineraries have been sold...

But I'd rather follow the rules anyway. ;)
