IHG leaving 4 Northern Territory Hotels, rebranding as Hilton/Doubletree

Why's that? What is the difference between a HI and a HIX? (I've stayed at HI, but not a HIX)
A Holiday Inn Express is a simpler room but I find them efficient. Some do not have a fridge but include breakfast.

I received this email today. Out of these I've only stayed at the Alice Springs property but I'm a bit sad, I do like the brand. Perhaps it really is time to give Hilton a serious look...

It's time to say goodbye

As of 1 May 2013, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) will cease management of Crowne Plaza Darwin, Holiday Inn Esplanade Darwin, Holiday Inn Darwin and Crowne Plaza Alice Springs.

As a valued Priority Club Rewards member, we wish to take this opportunity to thank you for your support of our Darwin and Alice Springs hotels over the past 10 years.

<...>

While we are saddened by the end of a long relationship with Darwin and Alice Springs, IHG is confident of its future in Australia. Our hotels in Kakadu, Gagudju Crocodile Holiday Inn and Gagudju Lodge Cooinda, remain in our portfolio and we continue to have a strong presence nationally in Cairns, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, NSW Central Coast, Adelaide and the Gold Coast.

That's really great news! Hilton adding some Doubletrees and SPG adding some more 4Points and even introducing Alofts here is the exactly what this market needs! More please :p

I really agree with this comment!

I'm semi-decided that I'd to have HH & SPG status. As much as I've tried to "like" IHG, I just cannot. I'm hopeless at winning lotteries, and status benefits at IHG seems to be exactly that....a lottery!

That is changing over the next 9 months, and I have to say I would rather see new hotels added rather than brand swaps, after all the lack of inventory in DRW still means ridiculous room rates during the dry. At least on the flip side DRW now has a hotel with a lounge, and I am excited to see what renovations are planned for the double trees, the old beaufort needs work.

I do hear you, but the next 9 months! How? There are not many lounges at IHG properties (except those where Hilton are in direct competition). So perhaps they can add breakfasts..... But will that be strictly policed or be like HH where they'll regularly offer above the prescribed benefit (in Oz)? We could go on, but taking the breakfast scenario, firstly, we don't know if they will offer that.... If they do, will it be full buffet or continental, will be lateral or literal etc etc

I don't think IHG are too worried by Hilton, just look at the numbers locally for hiltons vs IHG hotels, free net, set upgrades, guaranteed breakfasts etc etc. Never pays to put your eggs in one basket.

NYE in Sydney for $30 a night at the rocks is hard to beat!
