Why isn't it extended to Jetstar?

Just saying. Sometimes you don't have a choice but fly JQ. Eg evening Flight ADL-DRW. Is it that standard Boganair pax couldn't cope?

You can OLCI with JQ 48 hours prior or use their mobile app & if you're not travelling with HLO, certain airports have an auto bag drop facility so you're able to get your bag tag from a JQ kiosk then go to an auto bag drop & not have to queue up.

JQ have a completely different res system & checkin system to QF so obviously they can't have next gen checkin per se, however the end result (DIY checkin) is still pretty much the same.

What aspect of JQ checkin do you have issues with?

Licence fees might also be an issue. The jetstar model is lowest cost possible. That is generally going to mean simple system that don't require staff. Hence self service systems where the passenger does the work for jetstar.

Autobag mainly. I understand they use Navitaire, and not Amadeus, but the equipment to achieve that outcome is theoretically there, and shared services around the word at airports like DUS allow this sort of thing.

I actually try to avoid people, and that's what I find strange with JQ.

Bit hard for me to comment further as I've never checked luggage with jetstar. So just OLCI and the first interaction is when boarding. (Aside from painful international check ins)

Is next generation check in that good?

It takes me ~5-10 minutes to go from checking in at the kiosk to getting my bag into the chute. That is assuming I do not have to wait for a kiosk to become available.

I use it sometimes but much prefer to use premium check in unless the wait looks to be too long.

Flew JQ DRW-DPS return last week (no other option on route). OLCI didn't even work for return leg as I couldn't check the bags in. Complained to agent, who contacted JQ. Also went to JQ on Twitter. Platitudes OLCI would work return, and we would be contacted at hotel. Didn't happen, but at least Mrs Here2go and I got an upgrade to emergency on the return leg, which up for being continuously being kneed in the behind on the way over on a flight that was delayed courtesy of an Ambon ash cloud changing the route and requiring more fuel.

Is it really cheaper to pay for JQ to use a different IT system to QF? Curious.

AFAIK you can't do OLCI for JQ international flights otherwise AFFers doing Flounge runs wouldn't have to resort to other means of checkin.

I don't see what the big deal is about whether you were checked in or not. How hard is for staff to do it when you arrive at the airport when you drop off your bags?

The official line trotted out IIRC is when they created the JQ brand, they needed to create a low cost culture that was untainted QF culture.

So they took a decision to silo off the JQ division in different premises and to even implemented separate IT infrastructure.
